Select Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Institutional Burials Bill 2022: Committee Stage (3 May 2022)

Mark Ward: ...amendment No. 52. On page 35, line 8, it seeks to insert “accidental, homicide, undetermined or suspicious deaths” after "violent". It seeks to expand the criteria in this section in which An Garda Síochána is alerted to evidence of human remains. The current requirements are too limited. There is real possibility that some deaths would not be adequately...

Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) Bill 2022: Report and Final Stages (12 Jul 2023)

Mark Ward: The Minister herself has said that this legislation is very new. It is new for An Garda, for the public and for ourselves in here. As much awareness as we can get out there - I take the Minister's word on it - and an awareness campaign would be very beneficial for the general public. As Deputy Howlin said, what is the harm in having an information campaign within the legislation.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: An Garda Síochána (8 Jul 2021)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Arson Attacks: Discussion (5 Mar 2024)

Mark Ward: That is misinformation and a downright lie. To be serious again, the perceived lack of consequences for actions such as targeting gardaí with fireworks is just not on. That perception can lead to more of these situations and have a snowball effect. Has the Garda learned from this or changed and evolved its tactics for dealing with these more aggressive protests recently? I would not...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Fire Safety (10 Sep 2020)

Mark Ward: ...stayed in Dublin in recent nights I probably would not have to bring this to her notice because it is quite visible. What resources are in place to deal with such a rise and what powers has An Garda Síochána to combat this rise? It is having a huge and detrimental impact on our communities.

Sex Offenders (Amendment) Bill 2021: Second Stage (16 Nov 2021)

Mark Ward: ...wish her well. As my colleagues have stated, we support this Bill. Some of the changes in the Bill are welcome and some are not before their time. For example, sex offenders will have to notify gardaí within three days rather than the current seven days if they have a change of address. This would enable gardaí to track where the sex offender is. However, the sex offender...

Joint Committee On Health: General Scheme of the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (30 Nov 2021)

Mark Ward: I have a quick question which Mr. Ryan may not have the answer to. On the 2,000 involuntary admissions last year referred to, my understanding is that the vast majority of them were through An Garda Síochána and not authorised officers. This is why we need these authorising officers in place to underpin this legislation and to make sure we take the best human rights approach to...

Joint Committee On Health: Addiction Services: Discussion (14 Jun 2022)

Mark Ward: ...use. As mentioned, that seems to be happening fairly regularly. I am interested in that drug related intimidation reporting programme that was mentioned. Who is that led by? Is it led by the Garda and who is it funded by? Has it been rolled out anywhere else?

Joint Committee On Health: General Scheme of the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Apr 2022)

I know that a pilot will also be launched in Limerick later this year that involves An Garda Síochána. Teams will meet people in the area who are having a mental health crisis and, hopefully, triage, treat and refer them on to the appropriate services. I agree with Dr....

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Organisation of Working Time (Domestic Violence Leave) Bill 2020: Discussion (25 Jan 2022)

Mark Ward: There were reports on the news last night - I am sure the Deputy saw them - about the 10% surge in domestic violence cases. There are still nine counties without refuges. We also heard that the Garda responded to more than 48,000 calls of instances of domestic abuse and there were over 4,000 criminal charges. This is an everyday occurrence and one can see how bad it is at the moment. ...
