(28 Nov 2023)

Niamh Smyth: ...who have been affected by the terrible events of Thursday. I will move now to my colleagues, who may have some questions. We will go section by section, if that is okay. Other Questions: Garda Deployment (6 Feb 2018)

Niamh Smyth: ...that have come through Templemore, only 44 have come to the Cavan-Monaghan division. My colleague, Deputy O'Callaghan, kindly came to Cavan for a day and visited Ballyconnell and Bailieborough Garda stations. If we are really to address rural crime, it is about personnel. It is so important. My understanding is not one garda has been appointed to community policing in the entire...

Other Questions: Garda Stations (13 Apr 2017)

Niamh Smyth: ...positive news that we are nearing the end of what has been a protracted procedure. We are cognisant of Brexit as we are in a Border county. Unfortunately rural crime has increased in the area so gardaí do need the requisite facilities to do their job properly. We do not have those facilities at the moment. I have been involved with gardaí through the community alert scheme...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (4 Apr 2019)

Niamh Smyth: ..., particularly robberies of ATMs. There have been robberies of ATMs in Ballybay, Kingscourt and Castleblayney. Will the Tánaiste, the Minister for Justice and Equality, Deputy Flanagan, and the Garda Commissioner direct extra resources, which are evidently badly needed in Cavan and Monaghan, to give the Garda the capacity to deal with these types of crime? These towns are besieged...

Vote 20 - An Garda Síochána (Revised)
Vote 21 - Prisons (Revised)
Vote 22 - Courts Service (Revised)
Vote 24 - Justice (Revised)
Vote 41 - Policing Authority (Revised)
Vote 44 - Data Protection Commission (Revised)
(14 Feb 2023)

Niamh Smyth: I thank the Minister. I am delighted to see that Bailieborough Garda station is a top priority for him. It is important not just for Bailieborough but for the entire region, which includes Cavan, Monaghan and Louth. Members of the Garda in east Cavan have had to put up with deplorable facilities up to this point, working out of Portakabins in a building that is really not fit for purpose....

Rural Crime: Motion (21 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: ...and Monaghan when it comes to rural crime I spoke to the Minister in respect of this issue last week. As I informed him, 16 homes within an eight-mile radius of Cootehill were broken into. The Garda station there operates on restricted hours. The Minister is aware that the force has been stripped of its resources in recent years. The number of sergeants in the district has almost...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Antisocial Behaviour: Discussion (22 Feb 2022)

Niamh Smyth: ...there was difficulty in getting volunteers for Foróige and similar organisations. Has that resolved itself? Have we work to do in encouraging volunteers? In my home town of Ballieborough the Garda and other volunteers set up a Foróige and we had a huge response from young people. There were 125 young people looking to sign up. Our biggest difficulty then was getting...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (26 Sep 2019)

Niamh Smyth: ...and removal of ATMs in the whole area. This is all against a backdrop of a possible no-deal Brexit, which will undoubtedly cause chaos along the Border region. We had an announcement of a Garda station over five years ago in Bailieborough. It is has never happened. In Blacklion, the Garda station has never been reopened. There is real discontent and worry with the announcement to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) (Amendment) Bill: Discussion (13 Feb 2024)

Niamh Smyth: ...are people taking video footage of the street and the buildings. Kids are using their phones all of the time. To a certain extent that is impossible to roll back. I feel incredibly sorry for An Garda Síochána, which has a real job trying to fight crime with two hands tied behind its back while the world and its mother can use whatever data they like. Yet and all, so many...

Misuse of Drugs (Amendment) Bill 2016: Second Stage (Resumed) (7 Jul 2016)

Niamh Smyth: ..., is it feasible to have members of the general force dealing with this growing epidemic? I am calling for the reinstatement of the dedicated drugs unit in Cavan-Monaghan. The drug detection rate is down in the Garda division of Cavan-Monaghan and we believe we are entering a new era of drug dealing. Dealers and users are becoming more discreet and secretive, with detections falling as...

Topical Issue Debate: Rural Crime (14 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: ...of 16 homes and businesses within an eight-mile radius of Cootehill were affected. The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport has just left the House. He was lucky enough to get Stepaside Garda station reopened. The Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht represents this constituency and Cootehill is her home base. Cootehill Garda station has restricted opening hours. It...

The format of the meeting is that I will invite our witness to make an opening statement, which will be followed by questions from members of the committee. As he is probably aware, the committee may publish the opening...

Policing, Security and Community Safety Bill 2023: Second Stage (Resumed) (2 Mar 2023)

The Bill embeds the key principle from the commission's report that preventing crime and harm and making our communities safer does not rest only with An Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice alone but can be most effectively achieved as a whole-of-government responsibility with Departments and agencies involving health, social...
