Written Answers — Departmental Expenditure: Departmental Expenditure (16 Dec 2009)

Richard Bruton: Question 306: To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food his expenditure on public relations, advertising, consultancies, conferences and away days in the period before and after the decision to halve expenditure on these activities; if he is satisfied that every effort is made to minimise expenditure that does not have a direct impact on the Department's key performance...

Houses of the Oireachtas Commission (Amendment) Bill 2009 [Seanad]: Second Stage (17 Dec 2009)

Richard Bruton: This is one of the rare occasions when we get the opportunity to ask pretty fundamental questions about ourselves and whether politics in Ireland is fit for purpose. It is a very important question at the moment, because so much change needs to be made in this country that politics alone can lead. It is a unique situation whereby getting ourselves out of the economic and social problems we...

Committee and Remaining Stage (17 Dec 2009)

Committee and Remaining Stage (17 Dec 2009)

Richard Bruton: I wish to divide the House on this amendment in order to discover if it agrees with the Minister of State's interpretation. I certainly do not agree with it.

Committee and Remaining Stage (17 Dec 2009)

Richard Bruton: I wish to protest. This is a shambles. We are debating whether the Dáil is fit for purpose and discussing legislation on how it should be funded. This amendment relates to a matter in respect of which there is a genuine difference of opinion and the Ceann Comhairle is using an order of the day in order to prevent the House making a mature judgment on it.

Committee and Remaining Stage (17 Dec 2009)

Richard Bruton: Does the Ceann Comhairle not recognise that he is presiding over something which is unacceptable in a modern democracy? We should have the opportunity to debate and decide on Bills.
