Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (29 Nov 2012)

Terry Leyden: Viva España!It would be timely for the Leader to consider allowing time for the continuation of consideration of the Registration of Wills Bill 2011, which I brought forward. The case of Heather Perrin, a former judge who is now serving two and a half years in prison brings this to mind. Ms Perrin, when practising as a solicitor, was responsible for a will that was defective and was to...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (29 Nov 2012)

Terry Leyden: The Minister for Social Protection turned down the Bill. The previous Seanad, of which the Cathaoirleach was a Member, passed the Bill with the unanimous approval of Fine Gael, the Labour Party, Fianna Fáil and Independent Senators. We now know the difficulties that can arise because we do not have a system of registering wills.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (29 Nov 2012)

Terry Leyden: I know who recommended that the particular solicitor be made a judge. I know the name but I will not mention it here because the Cathaoirleach probably knows who the person is. Let us say, the person was probably a member of the Green Party. That is all I can say.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (29 Nov 2012)

Terry Leyden: I will say no more. My party was part of that Government, but that is irrelevant. This is a wake-up call for the people of Ireland regarding their wills. They should check them out today and make sure the people they want to benefit will do so, and not the solicitor involved in making the will.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2012)

Terry Leyden: Would it be in order to welcome the return of Senator Healy Eames from China?

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2012)

Terry Leyden: I compliment her on her successful visit to China.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2012)

Terry Leyden: It is important because she received very negative media coverage. It is only fair that her work should be recognised in this House.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2012)

Terry Leyden: I have. Will the Leader arrange for a debate on the position of Shannon Airport and the agreement to write off the ¤100 million debt, which is very welcome in the region, and to decouple the airport from the Dublin Airport Authority, which might not be the best decision in the long term? Fianna Fáil has an enormous record with Shannon Airport. It is the party that built, developed,...

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2012)

Terry Leyden: No, it was Jim Mitchell. I was there.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2012)

Terry Leyden: Regardless of who said it, the point is that there was never a great tradition of support from the coalition Government for the Ireland West Airport, or Knock Airport as it was then. In the circumstances, there should be a discussion about this. Liam Scollan has expressed his view, and presumably to the Cathaoirleach and others. Given that our Taoiseach is from Castlebar, it is time to...

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2012)

Terry Leyden: He said the same about Harry Whelehan at one time.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2012)

Terry Leyden: What about Deputy Willie Penrose?
