Leaders' Questions (30 Apr 2014)

Gerry Adams: Tá a fhios ag an Taoiseach go bhfuil a lán daoine feargach faoin ábhar seo agus faoi Uisce Éireann. Tá muintir an Stáit fós gan eolas ar bith maidir leis an gcáin uisce. Tá a fhios ag an Taoiseach, agus é ag rith ar fud na háite, go bhfuil na daoine buartha faoi seo. Two weeks ago, the Taoiseach informed the House that the water tax...

Leaders' Questions (30 Apr 2014)

Gerry Adams: The Taoiseach's assertions about the constructiveness of the discussions and so on are very reassuring and I thank him for that. I note, however, that the Cabinet did not even discuss the issue today, which shows how constructive and serious it is about the matter. What we learned from the media again - it was not their fault as that is their job - was the news that the long-awaited banking...

Leaders' Questions (30 Apr 2014)

Gerry Adams: We will return to that issue and the scandal of how white collar crime is dealt with by the State. Today's news management was a clear attempt to distract attention from a Government that is in crisis. Governments stumble on small things such as this. People are angry at the imposition of one tax after another, which is completely contrary to the Government parties' election promises.

Leaders' Questions (30 Apr 2014)

Gerry Adams: The Government should invest taxpayers' money in fixing leaking pipes and providing councils with the wherewithal to provide water more economically, rather than spending it on the installation of meters. Clean, fresh water is a basic human right. The Taoiseach stated that Uisce Éireann would save money.

Leaders' Questions (30 Apr 2014)

Gerry Adams: Gabh mo leithscéal, a Cheann Comhairle, ná cuir isteach orm, le do thoil.

Leaders' Questions (30 Apr 2014)

Gerry Adams: I understand that. Some €86 million of taxpayers' money was spent on consultancy services. In addition, 29 staff of Uisce Éireann are paid more than €100,000 per annum. The Government has also pumped €490 million from local property tax - the family home tax - into Irish Water.

Leaders' Questions (30 Apr 2014)

Gerry Adams: Citizens are asking what is the point of the Labour Party in government. I have a simple question. Will VAT be levied on top of water charges? Has this matter been part of the discussions the Cabinet is not having? Will the Taoiseach at least indicate what is the Fine Gael Party's position on the issue and allow the Labour Party to catch up another time, rather than have us read about the...

Leaders' Questions (30 Apr 2014)

Gerry Adams: When?

Written Answers — Department of Environment, Community and Local Government: Planning Issues (30 Apr 2014)

Gerry Adams: 477. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government the action he will take in respect of officials in Donegal County Council or others, involved in wrongdoing, in view of the High Court order of 14 June 2013 in the judicial review case (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19146/14]

Written Answers — Department of Environment, Community and Local Government: Planning Issues (30 Apr 2014)

Gerry Adams: 478. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government further to the independent assessment announced on 14 June 2013, of planning procedures and practices in six local authorities that were the subject of a planning review report, the terms of reference of the assessment; the persons tasked to carry it out; when the results will be published; and if he will make a...

Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Foreshore Licence Applications (30 Apr 2014)

Gerry Adams: 641. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine in relation to the significant build up of silt in Annagassan harbour, County Louth which has been problematic for at least two years and which presents a dangerous health and safety issue for fishermen, and has altered the coastal line, the actions he will take to address this problem; the steps he has taken to introduce a...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Social Workers Register (30 Apr 2014)

Gerry Adams: 790. To ask the Minister for Health when CORU, which regulates health and social care professionals in Ireland, began to charge persons who did not study in the Twenty-six Counties €410 for their qualification to be recognised and a further €100 to register to become a social worker; if he will consider reducing this fee for those persons who study social work in other...

Leaders' Questions (6 May 2014)

Gerry Adams: I agree with Deputy Martin on the medical cards issue, which I have raised with the Taoiseach many times to no avail. Today, however, I want to ask him about his announcement on the water tax. I noted once again that he had gone to the media with this announcement as opposed to coming into the Dáil to discuss it. Let us be clear: from what we know, this is a water tax. It is Fianna...

Leaders' Questions (6 May 2014)

Gerry Adams: There is nothing in the Taoiseach's proposal about conserving water. He has not spelled out what he will do in order that people will not have to pay this tax. He should listen to what he is saying. He might as well be standing or sitting as naked as the day he was born, like the emperor thinking no one notices.

Leaders' Questions (6 May 2014)

Gerry Adams: The Taoiseach might as well be sitting there thinking people are absolute amadáns.

Leaders' Questions (6 May 2014)

Gerry Adams: Working people, people who will pay the tax, are not laughing today. They do not believe it is funny but that it is very serious. It comes on top of a whole series of punitive taxes and is totally contrary to the Government's election promises. Sinn Féin consistently and resolutely opposed the imposition of a water tax on already hard-pressed families.

Leaders' Questions (6 May 2014)

Gerry Adams: Sinn Féin prevented a water tax in the North. The Taoiseach knows this but continues to mislead the Dáil on the issue.

Leaders' Questions (6 May 2014)

Gerry Adams: The Taoiseach could have done the same here. He is dishonest in claiming Uisce Éireann can tell householders how much they will pay for water in the next few years. His proposal brings us only to 2016, just in time for the commemoration of the Easter Rising, at which point the tax will increase. The Taoiseach knows this. These charges never decrease; they always increase.

Leaders' Questions (6 May 2014)

Gerry Adams: I am finished. Does all of this not expose the fact that the Government continues, even at this stage, to mislead citizens on the water tax issue in an effort to get through the elections?

Leaders' Questions (6 May 2014)

Gerry Adams: That is what the Taoiseach believes. They are his words.
