Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Aviation Authority: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: The Bill dealing with AirNav Ireland is coming through the Seanad. When is it likely, or when is it hoped, that the split will take place?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Aviation Authority: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: I did not get a lot of time and I am trying to finish. There are two further points I want to raise that are very relevant.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Aviation Authority: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: Just to make the point-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Aviation Authority: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: Hold on now.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Aviation Authority: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: Okay. We are interviewing the chairperson-designate of a company that will no longer exist in three or four months' time. However, that is beside the point. When the chairperson of the Dublin Airport Authority, DAA, appeared before the committee, he made the point that the level of charges the airport was allowed to levy was based on the fact it was dealing with up to 32 million passengers...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Aviation Authority: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: To conclude, I thank Ms Hynes for performing her role as chairperson since January. She is hoping the position will no longer be there from early in 2022. Perhaps there is scope for her to be involved with either one of the new companies, which I hope will be the case. I thank her for her service.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Aviation Authority: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: It was not as long as that taken by the first member to speak.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: An Post: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: Ms Bolger is very welcome, as is Mr. Laverty. I am relatively new to this committee but I was in the Chair in the Seanad back in 2017 when the price increase was approved. I remember listening to the Minister at the time saying how important it was. It was a substantial increase but it has been shown to have been necessary as the company may have been facing a real viability crisis at the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: An Post: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: Perhaps we could get a list of services that Ms Bolger feels that An Post can deliver, some of which we may not have even thought about. I ask her to supply us with a list.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: An Post: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: Until I read the opening statement, I was not familiar with that service. I am glad I know about it now but An Post may have a job to do in terms of making others aware of it. As I said, An Post is a really strong and trusted brand. People might be wary of companies offering retrofitting loans but would be much more comfortable with loans that are guaranteed and resourced by An Post.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: An Post: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: I thank Ms Bolger. The cards that An Post gave out during the pandemic allowing people to write to others for free went down really well with people generally but particularly with older people. They missed that human connection, when they were not able to see their grandchildren in person and so on and the card was a really nice touch. It was very well done and I commend whoever thought...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Infrastructure Ireland: Chairperson Designate (1 Dec 2021)

Gerry Horkan: I thank Mr. Llewellyn for his very comprehensive opening statement. It is clear he has much experience in both the public and private sectors, both in executive and non-executive roles, in particular, chairing, and they are all skills he can bring to the role he has. If it is not too rude to ask, why TII? How did Mr. Llewellyn - a person who does not appear to have any Irish connections,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Infrastructure Ireland: Chairperson Designate (1 Dec 2021)

Gerry Horkan: How did Mr. Llewellyn find out about the role? Was he scouring various websites or was he approached? There is no reason he would not be approached because he clearly has an excellent CV for it. How did he discover the role was available?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Infrastructure Ireland: Chairperson Designate (1 Dec 2021)

Gerry Horkan: To clarify, Mr. Llewellyn became aware the role was about to become available at some point and he applied through the public appointments process? He put in his CV and had interviews and all the rest of it?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Infrastructure Ireland: Chairperson Designate (1 Dec 2021)

Gerry Horkan: It is just useful for people looking in to realise that it is a totally transparent process. Mr. Llewellyn became aware of the vacancy, he put his name forward, his CV was considered along with, I am sure, many other people's and here we are. I wish to bring to bear all his experience, the mix of public and private both in the UK and abroad, on a few of the points I wish to raise, in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Infrastructure Ireland: Chairperson Designate (1 Dec 2021)

Gerry Horkan: It is always worth asking.
