Noel Dempsey: No negotiations have taken place between my Department and the Department for Regional Development in Northern Ireland regarding a Letterkenny-Derry rail link. I am not aware of any proposals for a direct Dublin-Derry railway line. Services to and from Derry via Belfast are a matter for the Northern Ireland Authorities. I have raised this generally at the North-South Ministerial Council.

Noel Dempsey: One of the actions in the Road Safety Strategy 2007-2012 is to legislate for a graduated driver licensing system in the 3rd quarter of 2008. The first step towards this has already been taken in the Regulations made in October providing for the introduction of a driver learner permit for all new applicants for driver licences.

Noel Dempsey: Officials of my Department will shortly be meeting with EU officials to discuss the options, if any, for facilitating the provision of air services to meet the connectivity requirements of the west of Ireland in a liberalised, competitive aviation market. I have had no discussions to date with my UK counterpart on this matter pending the outcome of the discussions with the EU Commission.
