- Select Committee on Justice and Equality: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (7 Feb 2018)
Mick Wallace: I am only pointing out that the EU report shows that Ireland has the second highest level of Government freedom to appoint judges in the European Union. That is all I am saying. It means that we have the second highest level of political involvement in the appointment of the Judiciary. I am saying that unless we change things dramatically, we will still have one of the most politically...

- Select Committee on Justice and Equality: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (7 Feb 2018)
Mick Wallace: I do not find that argument rational. Let us suppose the commission was looking at candidates and found that it could not recommend any of them. Does it mean we will leave a vacancy and appoint no one? Will we just let the Government pick its political friends for the job or will we ask the commission to have another trawl to see if it can come up with someone fit for the job?

- Other Questions: Suicide Prevention (8 Feb 2018)
Mick Wallace: I do not know how much the Minister of State knows about what it is like on the ground but it is abysmal. The HSE web page for Wexford mental health services lists two mental health hospitals and five day services. There are no links to provide more information but there are phone numbers. If one Googles the names of the five day services, only one has a website, and it - like two of the...
- Other Questions: Suicide Prevention (8 Feb 2018)
Mick Wallace: In 2010, when the acute beds were closed at St. Senan's hospital in Wexford and the service moved to Waterford, we had the same suicide rate as Waterford. Now, however, the rate in Wexford is double the rate in Waterford. This is an issue and St. Patrick's Hospital in Waterford is not even fit for purpose.
