- Seanad: Protection of Children (Online Age Verification) Bill 2024: Second Stage (11 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: I thank the Minister, Senators and staff of the House for their co-operation and, indeed, contributions by Members. The House stands adjourned until 12 noon next Monday in accordance with the orders of the Seanad today.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (15 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: Like Senator Dolan, I express my congratulations to Gaillimh on its great win, and to Armagh. It will be a sensational all-Ireland football final. Of course, the hurling final will be played between the Cathaoirleach's county and County Clare. The combinations are a bit different this year, which will make for two good all-Ireland finals. I will briefly return to the issue of crime in...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Sustainable Travel Operations Update: National Transport Authority (10 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: I thank the Chair. It is kind of him to give me a few minutes. I say hi to the witnesses. It is my first time to be at a meeting with them. I am not a member of the committee but as an Oireachtas Member, I can be here. It is important to say that we are making real progress on transport throughout the country. I welcome the commitment, work, and ongoing discussions and negotiations the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Sustainable Travel Operations Update: National Transport Authority (10 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: I thank Ms Graham.
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (16 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: I support the sentiments that have been expressed about Senator Currie’s amendment in particular. There are undoubtedly issues with these masts. I see them in my own county. The planning authority decides that it does not have to consult the public on the licences and, all of a sudden, people find these structures being erected. I know a man who has a site on the edge of a village...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (11 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: I thank the Cathaoirleach for the new title first of all.
- Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (11 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: I am happy with that.
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (16 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: I had indicated, Acting Chairperson.
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (16 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: That is fine.
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (16 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: I apologise to Senator Dolan; I had not realised she had been in the Chamber earlier and had gone out. It was not in any way intentional. I support the comments by Senators Chambers and Dolan on the need for real infrastructural development particularly in the west and midlands. As both said, we are a long way behind and need to move forward. We certainly do not want the west and...
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (16 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: Amendments Nos. 114 to 133, inclusive, are related and may be discussed together by agreement. Is that agreed? Agreed.
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (17 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: Like the Leas-Chathaoirleach, I am privileged to be asked to chair debates by the people who run this House. I acknowledge the importance of everybody's comments and their points of view. I am also conscious that the Minister and his officials have been here for two hours, and he has not been allowed to make one comment. I also calculated-----
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (17 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: Can I make my comments now without interruption? I do not interrupt people. I have also noted that we have probably lost the chance to have an extra 100 amendments put through because of so many long speeches. I am saying this to everybody.
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (17 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: If the speeches were cut, many of the Senators would get their amendments through. They can shake their heads all they like; it is a fact of life. I am calculating at the moment the amount of time that has been spent on long speeches. I am also looking at the document, which has quite a number of repetitions of amendments. That is fine. I acknowledge there is some good stuff in there....
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (17 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: I welcome the Minister and his officials. I compliment him and his two Ministers of State and their officials for at least bringing this Bill before the Houses of the Oireachtas to get something done about planning. This has been going on and has been discussed for years and little has been done. He is here and there has been a lot of discussion within parties and outside parties, and with...
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (17 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: Before Senator Cummins speaks, I welcome guests of Deputy Grealish from Galway to the Chamber. I believe they are from Ireland, the United States and elsewhere. On behalf of all the Senators here I hope they enjoy their stay and tour of Leinster House. I also acknowledge, because Senator Fitzpatrick told me so, Clemence and Ciarán from the North Strand in Dublin Central who were here...
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (17 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: I welcome more guests of Senator Noel Grealish, all the way from New York. "New York, New York". They are very welcome. May they have a wonderful day. I hope they enjoy the workings of our Parliament. The weather is even good for them.
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (17 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: I am conscious that we are over three hours into the debate. The Senator speaks with passion, we all accept that and nobody is against that. I will give the Senator one minute for a right to reply because the Minister has had no opportunity to get near. The Senator is entitled to her right to reply.
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (17 Jul 2024)
Eugene Murphy: In fairness, Senator, I allowed you in.
