Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Climate Change Policy (14 Dec 2021)

Bríd Smith: Recently we saw more protests to highlight the ongoing concerns that ordinary farmers have that they are going to have to pick up the tab for the failures of big agrifood corporations. What are the views of the Minister of State on the recently published Teagasc report on farm sustainability which found that greenhouse gas emissions from dairy farming rose in 2020 largely due to an increase...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Climate Change Policy (14 Dec 2021)

Bríd Smith: I do not know if the Minister of State noticed that there was an article inThe Journalreporting from the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, a non-profit organisation. The article showed that the quite shocking increase in greenhouse gas emissions from the beef and dairy sector expansion was accounted for by two Irish companies, namely, Larry Goodman's ABP Meats, and Dawn Meats, to...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Climate Change Policy (14 Dec 2021)

Bríd Smith: There is a shocking level of emissions from the agricultural sector. I think the Government has just talked itself into saying it cannot do this. It says it must not do it, but it does not know how we are going to reduce emissions. We can do it in many ways but the Government will not reduce the herd. That is absolute nonsense. There has been a policy in this State to increase the herd...

Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) (Foetal Pain Relief) Bill 2021: Second Stage [Private Members] (15 Dec 2021)

Bríd Smith: I wish to share time with Deputy Barry. I understand what Deputy Cairns meant when she said she had hoped this Bill would not be before the House and that it is not something we wish to face. Given I am a good bit older than her and been through a life of political activism, all I can say is get used to it. Every time you make one step forward, they will try to grab two steps backwards....

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (15 Dec 2021)

Bríd Smith: The last time I raised this issue, the Tánaiste answered by begging more questions than he actually answered. It is on the ownership of the national maternity hospital. I asked about the possibility of placing a compulsory purchase order on the land and the legal advice received from the senior counsel, Stephen Dodd. In his answer the Tánaiste described a situation in the...

Appointment of Member and Chair of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission: Motion (15 Dec 2021)

Bríd Smith: I know nothing about the new appointee, Judge MacCabe, but I think his role should be challenged, not just in respect of what happens in the future but also in how he deals with the legacy of GSOC. The first complainant to GSOC - I cannot remember the year - was Deputy Gino Kenny. He was not a Deputy then. We had RTÉ footage of him being thrown off a bridge in Bellanaboy by six...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Services (16 Dec 2021)

Bríd Smith: 25. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if his attention has been drawn to the fact that as a result of criteria laid down by the NTA, bus drivers on some routes in the Dublin Bus network are being instructed to wait at specific locations en route and to drive at reduced speeds, regardless of the prevailing traffic volumes, and that this is resulting in delays for passengers...

To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if his attention has been drawn to the fact that Dublin Bus has informed drivers on certain routes that the NTA may tender out their route as a result of the failure of that route to reach NTA-determined criteria and that such criteria, as laid down in the contracts with Dublin Bus, seem incapable of reflecting or adapting to prevailing...

To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the rationale for not extending similar pay and conditions to Youthreach education providers as other teachers; his views on whether Youthreach students are entitled to fully qualified teachers receiving the same pay and conditions and opportunities for career progression as their peers teaching in secondary schools; if his attention has been...

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Third Level Examinations (16 Dec 2021)

Bríd Smith: 467. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the position in relation to exams in NUI Galway; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that students are being forced to sit exams in venues without social distancing or ventilation; if his further attention has been drawn to the added stress and anxiety caused to students and staff that are fearful of catching and spreading the virus in...

Bríd Smith: 13. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if assurances can be provided to CIÉ workers in the regular wages scheme who have retired since June 2020 that the delay in his signing the statutory instrument to give effect to changes in the regular wages pension scheme will not result in them losing any of the improved benefits or lump sums once the statutory instrument is...

Ceisteanna (Atógáil) - Questions (Resumed) - Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Pension Provisions (16 Dec 2021)

Bríd Smith: I thank Deputy Duncan Smith for allowing me to raise this important issue as we hurtle towards Christmas. I think five times this year I have asked the Minister for Transport if and when he will sign the statutory instrument that will allow for an improved pension for CIÉ workers. Currently a CIÉ worker takes home a pension of €130 per week. If the Minister signed the...

Ceisteanna (Atógáil) - Questions (Resumed) - Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Pension Provisions (16 Dec 2021)

Bríd Smith: I was told it would be confirmed in September. I have asked about this matter five time this year.

Ceisteanna (Atógáil) - Questions (Resumed) - Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Pension Provisions (16 Dec 2021)

Bríd Smith: The change would mean €30 a week to a CIÉ worker. It is not a patch on the pension the Minister of State or other Ministers will get. This is not good enough.
