Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I know we will have statements on the budget later but I have to express my delight at the announcement this afternoon of the change of the national childcare scheme, NCS, to include projects such as those in the Dublin 8 After School Alliance, including the Robert Emmet Community Development Project and the Solas Project. Those organisations have been advocating for that change because as...

Seanad: Budget 2022: Statements (12 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I am proud of this budget and am delighted that it will tackle the cost of living for families, with a record €716 million investment in childcare as well as the extension of a range of housing, health, education and welfare supports. Addressing the cost of childcare has been a top priority for Fine Gael. The investment total of €716 million in early years services includes a...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (13 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I would like to be associated with Senator Murphy's remarks about the late Paddy Moloney. He is truly a great loss; he leaves a fantastic legacy.I wish to bring to the House's attention and seek a debate on the care of migrant children who have come to our country as unaccompanied minors and their oversight while they are in care. I pay tribute to Ms Shamim Malekmian of the Dublin...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (13 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I will finish now, and I thank the Leas-Chathaoirleach for his indulgence. The House needs to debate this subject. I will raise it as a Commencement matter with the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth. We need to focus on this. As a state, we have a responsibility to these children. They need to be represented and spoken for in the Houses.

Seanad: Budget 2022: Statements (Resumed) (13 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: As chair of a drugs task force and as part of that network, I know the Senator gave a commitment to speak strongly on that issue. I am proud of the Senator and the drugs task forces would be proud of how she has represented their needs. I trust the Minister of State is on a trajectory of engagement that will have a positive outcome in the review.

Seanad: Budget 2022: Statements (Resumed) (13 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I now call on Senator Eugene Murphy. I ask that all remaining Senators stick rigidly to their time. There will then be time for everyone to speak.

Seanad: Budget 2022: Statements (Resumed) (13 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: If Senators speak longer than their time, some Senators will not get to speak. I call Senator Alice-Mary Higgins and thank Senator Lombard for yielding his speaking slot.

Seanad: Budget 2022: Statements (Resumed) (13 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: Thank you. I call Senator John Cummins, who is sharing time with Senator Paddy Burke.

Seanad: Budget 2022: Statements (Resumed) (13 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: You have half one minute.

Seanad: British Government Legacy Proposals: Motion (13 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I welcome the Minister to the House. I support the motion before the House wholeheartedly and I commend Senator Currie on championing it and affording us the opportunity to speak on this very important issue. When the British Government speaks about amnesty, it all sounds very philosophical and abstract. It is a language far removed from the lived experience of people's lives and losses. It...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: On Thursday last week, I began to implement a commitment, on which I will follow through every Thursday, to speak about the issues raised in the Joint Committee on Disability Matters in this House because it is an excellent forum for us to challenge some of our thinking around what I termed last week "ableist privilege", a phrase used by one of the witnesses. This morning, the committee...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: Absolutely.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Traveller Accommodation: Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (12 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I will give the Minister of State some of my time to finish what he was saying.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Traveller Accommodation: Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (12 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I thank the Minister of State. My focus, coming from my particular area, is on the effect of this on children. Some of the children living on these sites will talk about walking to school, seeing rats and being concerned that rats are running up and down the walls of trailers. It is harrowing to read in the No End in Site report about children living in those conditions. I urge that its...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Expert Group Review of Traveller Accommodation: Discussion (12 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I am happy to yield my time to give Mr. Joyce the opportunity to respond. I was merely going to speak about the No End In Sight report. I am fairly confident Mr. Joyce is more than capable of addressing that. I addressed my question to the Minister. I am happy to yield my time to allow Mr. Joyce the opportunity to speak.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Expert Group Review of Traveller Accommodation: Discussion (12 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I would add to that and say there is a settled privilege going on that requires that members of the Traveller community speak out about their lived experiences. We see this across other groups. Last week, at the Joint Committee on Disability Matters, we heard of an ability privilege. We need to hear the lived experiences of people. This report is horrific, as are the statistics in regard...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Expert Group Review of Traveller Accommodation: Discussion (12 Oct 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: Having represented Travellers under the equal status claims, several of which they have been denied participation in, I can attest that there is no question that there is widespread discrimination. There is no doubting that.

Mary Seery Kearney: I will give the Minister of State some of my time to finish what he was saying.
