Seanad: County Enterprise Boards (Dissolution) Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (3 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: I welcome the Minister to the House. My colleague Senator John Kelly has spoken on behalf of my party and I will add some comments. The county and city enterprise boards have done an excellent job during the past 21 years. They were set up in 1992 and I was a member of the first South Tipperary county enterprise board. It was one of the most worthwhile committees that I served on during my...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: Well said.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: Following on Senator O'Sullivan's comments on reflection regarding last Friday's result, will the Leader ask the Government to reflect on the proposed changes in local government which will mean the decimation of town local government as we understand it?

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: There was an attempt last week to rush through the Local Government Bill, which I am glad to say was seen off. If we are reflecting, we should reflect on politics across the board in this country from town councils upwards.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: I ask the Leader to pass that message on to the Taoiseach. I raise the terror that has been rained on people who are being asked to have their medical cards reviewed, particularly elderly people.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: Day after day I receive representations from elderly people who have received forms to have their medical records reviewed. Medical cards are being withdrawn without the chance for people to do the necessary paperwork. For me, this was brought to a head in recent days when an 83 year old man whom I was helping and representing contacted me to state he was to have surgery this week but still...

Seanad: Issues Facing Small and Medium Enterprises in Rural Towns: Motion (8 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: I move: "That Seanad Éireann:- notes with concern that SMEs in rural towns are suffering currently with many vacant units appearing on main streets as they struggle to compete on issues like parking costs with large out-of-town shopping malls; - notes the urgent need for an urban renewal scheme to incentivise the refilling of vacant units, and notes further the impact of upward-only rent...

Seanad: Issues Facing Small and Medium Enterprises in Rural Towns: Motion (8 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: The Senators record on that issue is not great.

Seanad: Issues Facing Small and Medium Enterprises in Rural Towns: Motion (8 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: I thank all Senators who contributed to the debate. I sincerely thank Members for allowing this motion to pass without amendment. That means a lot to Senator Whelan and myself because this motion was tabled in the spirit of trying to direct policy in order to improve the lot of small and medium-sized businesses. It gives me no great pleasure to say to the Minister that as we speak, an...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: I support my colleague Senator Ned O'Sullivan on the issue of councillors. I ask the Leader, if he is making contact with the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, to check out a concern of mine with him. I have been led to believe that councillors' salaries, small as they are at €16,000 or thereabouts, have been reduced under the Haddington Road agreement,...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: It is not an internal matter. This is the national broadcaster and GAA is our national sport. It is our number-one sport. After the year we have had in hurling and football, it is unacceptable that RTE, as our national broadcaster, would refuse to tell the people of Ireland the results of county finals across the country. I was also told that it would be impossible to carry 64 results in...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: I thank Senator Diarmuid Wilson for that clarification.

Seanad: The One Percent Difference National Giving Campaign: Statements (22 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: I welcome the Minister to the House and I also welcome the fact that the House is giving this issue a further airing. The Minister launched this campaign in June 2013 and the campaign is now being giving greater publicity. The radio advertisements to which Senator Ó Murchú referred are giving the people of Ireland a greater understanding of the campaign. Irish people have a long...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: I add my voice to that of Senator O'Brien in expressing sympathy to the family of Councillor Gary Wyse, whom I knew quite well. He always played the ball, and did not play the man, in politics. It is something I admired about him. I join Senator Bacik, and Senator Jim D'Arcy who raised it yesterday, on the one-parent family tax credit issue. The proposal in the budget is to cut the tax...

Seanad: Seanad Reform: Statements (23 Oct 2013)

Denis Landy: I welcome the Taoiseach. No more than his county footballers, he has a habit of coming back for more. We welcome the fact that he is in the House to discuss the outcome of the referendum. We appreciate that he has given us two hours of his time for an open and constructive debate. If we had not had a referendum on 4 October, we probably would not be discussing the matter today. The fact...

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Nov 2013)

Denis Landy: I echo the call made in the House yesterday for a debate on EirGrid and pylons. The Labour Party Senators in the House will continue to make the case for undergrounding cables across the country. We have recently discovered it can happen in certain parts of the country, so there is no reason it cannot happen everywhere. That is the case we will make. In 1884 the Gaelic Athletic Association...

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Nov 2013)

Denis Landy: This hotel is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents the beginning of a part of our culture that defines us as a nation more than any other. It binds people throughout the country together. I call on the Leader to ask the Minister of State, Deputy Brian Hayes, who has responsibility for the Office of Public Works, OPW, and the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Deputy...

Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2013: Committee Stage (6 Nov 2013)

Denis Landy: Senator Byrne should have some manners and stop interrupting the Minister.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Reform of Local Government: Discussion
Association of County and City Councils
(7 Nov 2013)

Denis Landy: I welcome the delegation from the Association of County and City Councils and thank Councillor O'Brien for his contribution. In regard to the apportionment of commercial rates and the local property tax, how does the association envisage the money being distributed to individual municipal district councils? I support Councillor O'Brien's suggestion about bringing community development...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Reform of Local Government: Discussion
Association of County and City Councils
(7 Nov 2013)

Denis Landy: I asked Councillor O'Brien about the collection and allocation of moneys at municipal level and the basis on which it will be apportioned.
