Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Sustainable Mobility Policy: Department of Transport (13 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: I think 130 schools are involved in the scheme. I am not sure how many of them were accepted in the 170.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Sustainable Mobility Policy: Department of Transport (13 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: The point the Chairman and I are making is that there is significant untapped potential and we need to prioritise that, get people hooked and interested because if you get used to cycling at a young age, you will continue to do it. If you have never done it, it is more difficult to get back into it when one is used to driving rather than cycling all the time. I say that as a person who did...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Sustainable Mobility Policy: Department of Transport (13 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: The information is in the report. One of the briefing documents we were sent refers to 130 or 131 secondary schools and 787 primary schools. However, that figure of 130 or 131 is out of 700 secondary schools. This means that fewer than 20% of secondary schools applied and only 20% of those applications were successful. A very small number of schools are being tapped at secondary level....

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (20 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: First, I would like to extend my deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of Sir David Amess MP, who I had reason to meet a number of times. He was also an alternate on the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly, as I was in the last term. What happened to him last Friday was truly shocking. I wish to place on the record my condolences, which I extend to his friends and...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (21 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: I support Senator Keogan. I just came in from the Joint Committee on Transport and Communications. It is a harrowing story. I had seen it online. It is so tragic. If anything can come out of it, it is that people might try to be that bit kinder to each other and try not to engage in this activity. It is horrific. Perhaps they do not appreciate what they are doing but they are really...

Gerry Horkan: I welcome the Minister for Finance, Deputy Paschal Donohoe, back to the House, exactly a week since he was last here.

Seanad: Finance (European Stability Mechanism and Single Resolution Fund) Bill 2021: Committee Stage (21 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: Amendments Nos. 3 to 12, inclusive, have been ruled out of order as they are in conflict with the principle of the Bill as read a Second Time.

Gerry Horkan: When is it proposed to take Report Stage?

Seanad: Finance (European Stability Mechanism and Single Resolution Fund) Bill 2021: Committee Stage (21 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: Is that agreed? Agreed.

Gerry Horkan: When is it proposed to sit again?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Chairperson Designate of the DAA: Discussion (20 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: I thank Mr. Geoghegan. I am conscious of the fact that this is a slightly different process, in that we are almost interviewing Mr. Geoghegan, but he is being reappointed, so it is not the same. We are not trying to test him out to see if he is a good fit for the job and appropriate, because clearly, he would not have been reappointed if he was not. Firstly, I thank him for the job he has...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Chairperson Designate of the DAA: Discussion (20 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: Obviously, Mr. Geoghegan is very interested and involved, but he is not out there all day, everyday. That is not the role of the chairman. From a committee and housekeeping perspective, when did Mr. Geoghegan's term finish? How long has he been in limbo, as it were, as chairman designate?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Chairperson Designate of the DAA: Discussion (20 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: Is it correct that that did not impact on Mr. Geoghegan's ability to do anything as such? He could make all the same decisions and have all the same executive - or non-executive - authority, regardless of whether he was chairman or chairman designate?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Chairperson Designate of the DAA: Discussion (20 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: I am just conscious that because of Covid, there have been delays in the appointment of some chairpersons. However, that has had no impact on Mr. Geoghegan's role as chairman designate. He has the same status in terms of being able to make decisions, conduct meetings, sign documentation or whatever.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Chairperson Designate of the DAA: Discussion (20 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: That is the point I was developing. I am conscious of the fact that the delay in Mr. Geoghegan coming to this meeting has not impaired his role as chairman designate. He has been equally effective as chairman and chairman designate. I follow the Dublin Airport twitter feed, which is quite an entertaining one. I note that there are discussions with Ballygawley Roundabout and other users...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Chairperson Designate of the DAA: Discussion (20 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: The high 20 millions?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Chairperson Designate of the DAA: Discussion (20 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: Mr Geoghegan might give a final figure of what he thinks the airport will do for 2022.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Chairperson Designate of the DAA: Discussion (20 Oct 2021)

Gerry Horkan: The one in Dublin will cost €320 million.
