John Brady: There is a housing crisis and we must all acknowledge it. Serious concern has also been expressed, however, by members of the Defence Forces. These must also be listened to as well.

John Brady: -----the Defence Forces, and its members will articulate these points better than I will. I refer to the essential need for a military presence in the city centre, or as close to it as possible. Regarding any notion of putting this on the periphery, out in Kildare, and building something on the Curragh or somewhere like that, I do not think that would be a runner for anyone. There are...

Vote 27 - International Co-operation (Revised)
Vote 28 - Foreign Affairs (Revised)
(14 Feb 2023)

John Brady: I will begin by offering my condolences to the people of Türkiye and Syria in what has been an horrific eight days. More than 35,000 people have been killed in both countries. I offer my condolences also to GOAL, which has lost 27 of its members, and there may still be some people missing also. Again, I offer my condolences. It is extraordinary that seven survivors have been pulled...

Vote 27 - International Co-operation (Revised)
Vote 28 - Foreign Affairs (Revised)
(14 Feb 2023)

John Brady: The Tánaiste has set a parameter for himself and hopefully we will see it. We seem to be going backwards. What is the approach and where is the roadmap for us to achieve that very legitimate objective of reaching 0.7% of GNI? Perhaps the Tánaiste will touch on that. I also want to address an issue that I brought up with the Tánaiste on the floor of the Chamber last...

Vote 28 - Foreign Affairs (Revised)
(14 Feb 2023)

John Brady: The occupied territories Bill. Is now the time to take action and to hold Israel to account? Unfortunately, the two-state solution is quickly diminishing. Palestinians are no longer looking at that as a viable option, unfortunately. I ask the Tánaiste for his view on that. It ties in with Vote 28 as well, but on this particular Vote in relation to Palestine, what analysis has been...

Vote 28 - Foreign Affairs (Revised)

John Brady: Yes. I hear what the Tánaiste is saying about what would happen if we gave it all now but I beg to differ.

John Brady: We need a path and I want to know how we can get one, which I think is what the NGOs want to see. A commitment has been given that we will achieve our target by 2030. We lack a clear pathway and I want to know how we will get there while building capacity.

Vote 28 - Foreign Affairs (Revised)
(14 Feb 2023)

John Brady: Ms Siobhán Byrne is no stranger to the committee and I commend her and the team in the Passport Office. There were huge challenges last year and extraordinary work was done. Processing 1.08 million passports is a phenomenal achievement. This year I think we are going to be up there again. There were 148,000 applications in January, which is second only to February of last year. We...

John Brady: I appreciate there is a phone service for Members of the Oireachtas. That was not my concern. It was members of the public and their ability to talk to a member of staff in the Passport Office. It posed serious challenges last year, with people phoning and unable to get hold of someone. Have additional resources, that is, more people, been put in place?

John Brady: I have reason to testify. My son had to renew his passport and the turnaround took slightly longer than two or three days. It was approximately ten days, which is good.

John Brady: I know there is a PR campaign. The system online is efficient and quick. I appreciate and acknowledge all of that, but a greater PR campaign is needed to direct people to the online service. I am not sure what resources are put into that, but a concerted effort to run a PR campaign would be money well spent.

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Schools Building Projects (15 Feb 2023)

John Brady: 112. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if the tender document that was due to go out by the end of 2022 for the next bundle of schools has been issued for a school (details supplied); and if so, to confirm that the school is listed on the tender document; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Ukraine War: Ambassadors of Ukraine and Moldova (21 Feb 2023)

John Brady: The ambassador is very welcome to our committee on what is a harrowing anniversary. It is hard to believe it is nearly one year since the full and illegal invasion by Russia into Ukraine. I reiterate my full support and that of my party for the people of Ukraine and its full territorial integrity and the immediate full withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. It is frightening to think...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Ukraine War: Ambassadors of Ukraine and Moldova (21 Feb 2023)

John Brady: I thank the ambassadors for coming before our committee again. Much has been said, and correctly so, about the Russian invasion of George in 2008. That was the start of Russia's involvement in occupying other countries. We cannot forget the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014. The invasions of Donetsk and Luhansk also occurred around the same time. The reaction of the international...
