Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on New National Children’s Hospital: National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (12 Jul 2023)

John Lahart: Is it working to capacity?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on New National Children’s Hospital: National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (12 Jul 2023)

John Lahart: It creates a precedent though.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on New National Children’s Hospital: National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (12 Jul 2023)

John Lahart: I thank the witnesses. The original cost was €910 million. The board has paid out €818 million, which represents approximately 89% of the total overall cost, and the building is 89% complete. That €910 million was not intended to include inflationary costs, which, if I am correct in saying so, amounted to €50 million.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on New National Children’s Hospital: National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (12 Jul 2023)

John Lahart: Were there any additional unforeseen costs claimed above the €910 million, aside from those inflation-related costs?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on New National Children’s Hospital: National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (12 Jul 2023)

John Lahart: What do they amount to?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on New National Children’s Hospital: National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (12 Jul 2023)

John Lahart: On the €910 million, the additional costs come to around €50 million.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on New National Children’s Hospital: National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (12 Jul 2023)

John Lahart: Everybody here seems to be saying that we do not want to come down on any side vis-à-visthe board and BAM. Without meaning to belittle the situation, for context, it seems to me that if a contractor was working on a school or a house and there were questions about a low rate of productivity, progress reports not being provided for the four most recent months, insufficient resources...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (21 Sep 2023)

John Lahart: It is good to see the Minister, Deputy O'Brien, here this morning and firing on all cylinders. As a brief aside, 95 homes have been purchased by South Dublin County Council under the tenant in situscheme, with 133 planned, and I know the Minister would probably like to comment on that. I thank the Ceann Comhairle for allowing me away with this. The previous Government launched the north...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying: Assisted Dying in Europe: Discussion (26 Sep 2023)

John Lahart: I thank our witnesses for the contributions. My first question is for Dignitas and follows on from the previous speaker's contribution. It is terrible to reduce issues to statistics but are the proportions of men and women seeking the assistance of Dignitas services equal?

Ceisteanna - Questions: Programme for Government (26 Sep 2023)

John Lahart: I wish to speak on the Garda rosters. I am sure the Taoiseach is aware of this. I was talking to quite a number of younger gardaí over the summer because they attend the summer fairs and police those kinds of community activities. They are four days on, four days off at the moment. For gardaí, and particularly quite a number of younger gardaí in Dublin who live in what they...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (26 Sep 2023)

John Lahart: It was interesting to hear Members opposite reference the tenantin situscheme which, as the Taoiseach knows, has two strands. One is for social housing tenants whose landlords want to bring their tenancy to an end. The other strand is for those in private rental accommodation whose landlords want to bring their tenancy to an end. In both cases, the local authority or housing association...

Children's Health Ireland - Patient safety concerns and reviews in paediatric orthopaedic surgical services: Statements, Questions and Answers (26 Sep 2023)

John Lahart: I thank the Minister for taking the slot today. Having listened to his speech and read page 2 of his script, I noted paragraphs 3 to 7 are quite chilling and alarming. The affected parents already have knowledge of several of these matters. Reading the script coldly, I found what it referred to truly shocking. More questions will be asked about this matter and more statements will be made...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying: Assisted Dying in Europe: Discussion (26 Sep 2023)

John Lahart: Mr. Luley does not have evidence substantiating that, however.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying: Assisted Dying in Europe: Discussion (26 Sep 2023)

John Lahart: They show that there are more women.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying: Assisted Dying in Europe: Discussion (26 Sep 2023)

John Lahart: Has any work been done on the second statement Mr. Luley made, which suggested women are more reasonable than men? A Jack Nicholson quote from a certain movie comes to my mind but I will resist it. Is there any body of evidence to substantiate a reason for men preferring a more violent or rougher method?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying: Assisted Dying in Europe: Discussion (26 Sep 2023)

John Lahart: That is perfect.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying: Assisted Dying in Europe: Discussion (26 Sep 2023)

John Lahart: I am going to ask a number of questions because my time is disappearing. Perhaps the witnesses can come back in when I have asked them. There does not seem to be any evidence from Dignitas that numbers have been increasing in the way seen under the Dutch model, which seems to indicate that it is the change in the law and the widening of permissibility that is at issue there. I do not get...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying: Assisted Dying in Europe: Discussion (26 Sep 2023)

John Lahart: May I finish first?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying: Assisted Dying in Europe: Discussion (26 Sep 2023)

John Lahart: Yes, then I will allow Mr. Luley to come back in. Professor Boer, who I will also ask to come back to me at the end, said he is not categorically opposed to assisted dying. He has clearly been through the dark night of this in his own mind. Will he give us examples of the kinds of assisted dying he would not be categorically opposed to? He said that it is his feeling that intentional...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying: Assisted Dying in Europe: Discussion (26 Sep 2023)

John Lahart: I am happy to allow Senator Mullen to finish if we have the time.
