Susan O'Keeffe: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Second Stage (15 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: I welcome the Minister of State at the Department of Health, Deputy Alex White, and I thank him and his colleagues for the work and effort that has gone into putting this Bill together. I welcome the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill. It may be overdue but it is very welcome indeed. This has proved a very difficult time for many people as they wrestled with how to vote and what to...

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Second Stage (15 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: No matter how many times we stand up and say this, it seems to make no difference and it seems nobody is listening. I would like to refer to a report in the journal of the American Psychological Association which referred to the findings issued by a Professor Coleman. The association found that there were serious flaws in the figures she gave which indicated that more women who had...

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (16 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: That is not true.

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (16 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: On a point of information, that is clearly not the case.

Susan O'Keeffe: When is it proposed to take Committee Stage?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Groceries Sector: Discussion with the Competition Authority and the National Consumer Agency (16 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: A vote is due to be called in ten minutes' time and that is why I want to contribute now; otherwise, I would be happy to wait. I thank the delegates from both organisations for coming in. On the issue of "hello money" and all the various descriptions of that, the irony is that the large companies know they can get away with it. They realise the shortcomings and they know that it will take...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Groceries Sector: Discussion with the Competition Authority and the National Consumer Agency (16 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: -----yet the customer buying it thinks he or she is doing a good thing because the product is a Guaranteed Irish one. Is Mr. Shine saying that is effectively not the remit of the National Consumer Agency? If it is not, that is fine but please let me know. I am concerned about the Guaranteed Irish label and the Love Irish Food label.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Groceries Sector: Discussion with the Competition Authority and the National Consumer Agency (16 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: That strikes me as being a consumer issue. If I go into a shop and spend €2.50 on something, thinking I am buying Irish and supporting Irish producers, I am only doing so to a small extent. I am concerned about that. I would welcome a response on the issue.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Groceries Sector: Discussion with the Competition Authority and the National Consumer Agency (16 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: Will the agency do that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Groceries Sector: Discussion with the Competition Authority and the National Consumer Agency (16 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: That is not an answer. I do not believe everything I read in the newspapers.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Groceries Sector: Discussion with the Competition Authority and the National Consumer Agency (16 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: I have two supplementary questions but given that the Chairman has not spoken, I will hold off.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Groceries Sector: Discussion with the Competition Authority and the National Consumer Agency (16 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: The National Consumer Agency referred to a compliance blitz. Ms Goggin said that in 2012 the Competition Authority carried out visits to 349 traders. I wanted to clarify if this was done on the authority's own activation. Was the Competition Authority concentrating on one sort of trader as against another? Why were 349 traders visited? Is the authority being pushed to the pin of its...

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: Like many others, I am disappointed, concerned and shocked by the refusal of the religious orders to put their hands in their pockets to contribute to the scheme of compensation for survivors of the Magdalen laundries. I urge them to reconsider their position and respond in a better way to the women whose lives have already been very damaged and who have shown great courage, strength and a...

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Committee Stage (17 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: I concur with Senators Burke and Bacik in regard to the constitutionality of this Bill and that were we to try to amend it to include fatal foetal abnormality, we might find ourselves back where we do not wish to be. This is a moment when a kind of common sense applies. We have heard the stories and have seen the courage of the women who have come forward to tell their stories and we...

Seanad: Special Olympics Ireland: Motion (17 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: This sunny evening in July is a good moment to talk about something we all appreciate, although we often do not realise how much we appreciate it. It is hard to find words to thank the people who have been involved in Special Olympics, as Senator Eamonn Coghlan said, some for many years but particularly in the past ten years as the movement has built up and become ingrained in our...

Seanad: Special Olympics Ireland: Motion (17 Jul 2013)

Susan O'Keeffe: As a member of the Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions to which the Ombudsman made the report, I can tell the Senator that what he said is absolutely and categorically untrue. The Department of Health-----
