- Education Cuts: Motion (Resumed) (30 Oct 2008)
John O'Mahony: I am delighted to support the motion put down by Deputy Quinn and the Labour Party on the chaos that will be caused in the education sector if the cutbacks announced in the budget and subsequently by the Minister for Education and Science go ahead as planned. I have been a secondary school teacher for more than 30 years and I know at first hand the difficulties that will emerge inside and...
- Education Cuts: Motion (Resumed) (30 Oct 2008)
John O'Mahony: We should remember also that the teacher who goes with the team is doing so on a voluntary basis. He must be the minder, trainer, kit-man and medical man. He must get a referee, pay the caretaker and so on. As a teacher I always found that I could get to know my students better on the playing field and therefore got greater co-operation in the classroom. Is the Minister intending to put...

- School Staffing. (4 Nov 2008)
John O'Mahony: The Minister comes from a county where the players are well able to stand up for themselves. The children of this country, particularly those at second level whom the Minister spoke about who are involved in sport, depend on the teachers and parents. They came in their thousands to the outside of the Dáil last week. These children depend on the Minister and us as Deputies to stand up for...

- School Staffing. (4 Nov 2008)
John O'Mahony: I ask that the question of promoting sport in secondary school should be considered separately to help to provide it. As for primary schools, the Minister stated they were not affected. The reason is the teachers take out their teams in the evenings. It pertains to teachers' goodwill.
- School Staffing. (4 Nov 2008)
John O'Mahony: I suggest the Minister has broken the teachers' goodwill in this regard. I visited a school yesterday in which its voluntary system for supervision when teachers are absent at sports will be taken away, unless a little goodwill is shown on the Minister's part. I again appeal to him in this regard.

John O'Mahony: If the Minister shows goodwill, so will the teachers.

John O'Mahony: I thank the Leas-Cheann Comhairle for the opportunity to address a number of issues on a budget that obviously was rushed and so poorly thought-out that the old, the young and the farming community in particular have been forced to take to the streets to fight for their rights. The bringing forward of the budget by eight weeks was meant to demonstrate the Government was in control of...
