Seanad: Order of Business. (4 Jul 2003)

Terry Leyden: RTÉ has provided a great service for the State. I agree with Senator Browne. I believe there should be a dedicated Oireachtas channel. The BBC has a channel dedicated to the proceedings of the House of Lords. In fairness to you, a Chathaoirligh, there should be continuous coverage of the Oireachtas for the information of members of the public who put us here in the first instance.

Seanad: Order of Business. (4 Jul 2003)

Terry Leyden: I wish to be associated with the best wishes to Mr. Liam Fitzgibbon and all the editorial staff. It takes approximately 24 hours to produce the first reports of the proceedings of the House of Commons. With the system in this House, the best in the world, the Blacks of the debates are available within two hours. The quality and perfection of the work by the Debates Office are unique. I also...

Seanad: Order of Business. (4 Jul 2003)

Terry Leyden: I ask the Leader to convey it to the embassy. I hope the Americans will also be conscious of the need to restore peace in Iraq and give the Iraqis independence on Independence Day. In addition, I agree with Senators Dardis and Henry that it is outrageous that the detainees in Guantanamo Bay are not being given a proper trial in the United States, the home of democracy.

Seanad: Industrial Development (Science Foundation Ireland) Bill 2002 [ Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil ] : Report and Final Stages. (4 Jul 2003)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the finalisation of this Bill. I congratulate the Minister of State and the Tánaiste on bringing it forward and on their dealings with it. I also compliment the Leader of the House in whose name the Bill went through the House. That the Bill was initiated here shows the significance of the Seanad. We had a marvellous debate with contributions from Senator Henry and others involved...

Seanad: Protection of Employees (Fixed-Term Work) Bill 2003 [ Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil ] : Report and Final Stages. (4 Jul 2003)

Terry Leyden: I compliment the Minister of State on this excellent Bill. Both he and the senior officials in attendance have put enormous work into this legislation, for which this House thanks them. Senators Coghlan, Tuffy and O'Toole, president of the ICTU, have worked on the Bill, for which I thank them. I also thank my colleague, Senator Hanafin, our spokesman on labour affairs, for the input he has...

Seanad: Order of Business. (16 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: Will the Leader arrange to have, at the earliest opportunity, a detailed debate on the report of the task force on medical staffing, the Hanly report? If I am accused of being parochial I will accept the accusation because as far as I am concerned, we fought for and got a hospital in Roscommon. I signed a contract for approximately €8 million for an accident and emergency department in the...

Seanad: Order of Business. (16 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: As chairman of the health board, I did not sign a contract for €11 million to buy Portiuncula Hospital only for its maternity or A&E departments to close.

Seanad: Order of Business. (16 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: I want to see this report binned as quickly as possible because we will fight to hold Roscommon and we will win. Lightning will not strike twice as far as Roscommon is concerned. We rejected the Fitzgerald report in 1968—

Seanad: Order of Business. (16 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: —and we will reject the Hanly report in 2003.

Seanad: Order of Business. (16 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: It is all right for Senator Norris. He is only down the road from the Mater Hospital.

Seanad: Order of Business. (16 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: I was too good with my pen.

Seanad: Order of Business. (16 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: Very much so.

Seanad: National Task Force on Medical Staffing: Statements. (22 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: I would prefer if the Minister, Deputy Martin, was present to respond to some of the issues I will raise during this debate. I mean no disrespect to the Minister of State, Deputy O'Malley, who has more responsibilities in the Department than I had when I held that office between 1987 and 1989. In 1968 the famous Fitzgerald report was published. It was compiled by a group of consultants who...

Seanad: National Task Force on Medical Staffing: Statements. (22 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: During my time as chairman, tremendous work was done by the board on behalf of the public it served. I stand over that work. The national task force on medical staffing comprised about 51 consultants and professionals but hardly any consumers to put forward the views of the people of the west and other areas. I would not rely on any paid official, whether it is Dr. Hynes or Dr. Ryan, to put...

Seanad: National Task Force on Medical Staffing: Statements. (22 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: I need an hour to get through this. How many reports can one get through in ten minutes?

Seanad: National Task Force on Medical Staffing: Statements. (22 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: I am calling for another more detailed debate. Before I finish on this report, however, I want to say that, as far as I can see, health policy is being controlled by Aileen O'Meara of RTE. The ambulance chasing—

Seanad: National Task Force on Medical Staffing: Statements. (22 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: As far as I am concerned, she is a respected journalist, but RTE is made up of ambulance chasing—

Seanad: National Task Force on Medical Staffing: Statements. (22 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: The only opposition, as far as I can see, is being led by journalists who are influencing the Minister. All the top journalists are in Dublin with top medical attention, and they do not care a damn for the medical needs of the west or of Roscommon.

Seanad: National Task Force on Medical Staffing: Statements. (22 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: They do not care a damn, and every time—

Seanad: National Task Force on Medical Staffing: Statements. (22 Oct 2003)

Terry Leyden: —there is someone on a trolley, we have Aileen O'Meara or someone else from RTE coming on the scene.
