Seanad: Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) Bill 2022: Report and Final Stages (8 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: They are grouped together. It is up to the Minister.

Seanad: Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) Bill 2022: Report and Final Stages (8 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I will allow Senator Keogan back in.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: This morning I welcome the announcement from yesterday of the opening of the 2024 scheme of investment for the horticulture industry. It was announced by our own Minister of State, Senator Hackett. I have been a long advocate, as I know Senator Boyhan has, for the horticultural sector and its importance. We all acknowledge and realise that the sector has been falling behind colossally in...

Seanad: Energy (Windfall Gains in the Energy Sector) (Cap on Market Revenues) Bill 2023: Committee and Remaining Stages (9 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I will not delay proceedings. I want to look at it from a different angle. I know, as do Senators Carrigy and Garvey and people on the Government side, from talking to the public that people were saying this would never happen and it is almost there. It is very important we get that message across. This is really good for the consumer, whether we are talking about a commercial perspective...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Education and Upskilling in the Agriculture Sector (8 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I will keep this short because I realise the witnesses have been here a while. Speaking as somebody from a farming background, it is heartening to sit here and listen to people who genuinely have the interests of farming at heart. I think my colleagues would say the same. As Deputies Fitzmaurice and Ring said earlier, there has been a lot of harshness in the public arena in recent years...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Education and Upskilling in the Agriculture Sector (8 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: People are after waiting an hour.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Concerns for Sourcing Winter Animal Feed in Shannon Callows Area: Discussion (8 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I have been speaking to these gentlemen already but I extend a céad míle fáilte to them again. I am delighted to have been able to accommodate them here. I thank the Chairman, in particular, for ensuring we got here today. I do not think there is any particular point in going into everything. All of us around that region who are politicians know what the witnesses have...

Committee on Public Petitions: Closure of Vital Health Services: Discussion (13 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I will not detain the witness for long but the people of Roscommon will always support anybody from Galway, except when the football team is involved. In that case, we will not, but otherwise we will support them.

Committee on Public Petitions: Closure of Vital Health Services: Discussion (13 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: We will not talk about the Tipperary performance this year.

Committee on Public Petitions: Closure of Vital Health Services: Discussion (13 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I thank Ms Cronin and Mr. Quinn very much. They have made their case wonderfully and beautifully while being in no way aggressive about it. We can see how much this means to them and their friends in that particular area. I wish Ms Cronin well with her son. She is obviously an amazing person. I will not go back over questions that have already been asked but I acknowledge the role of...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (15 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I second the amendment to the Order of Business proposed by Senator Carrigy. I join the Senator in paying tribute to Louis Belton, a man with whom I was very friendly. We did not agree on politics but we had many good meetings and greetings. When I would slag Longford, he would always remind me that I was born in that town. He was never long in telling me that. He was a dapper dresser,...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (15 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Hear, hear.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Awareness, Prevention and Services for the Treatment of Sepsis: Discussion (15 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I appreciate the Cathaoirleach letting me in because I am not a member of this committee but I am a member of the Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen and we have discussed sepsis there. While watching and contributing to another committee meeting this morning, I heard part of Dr. Henry's address. I want to ask about children, particularly those with disabilities, who have lost...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Awareness, Prevention and Services for the Treatment of Sepsis: Discussion (15 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I know that when kids are young and they get sick, parental instinct should never be overlooked. I was glad to hear Dr. Martin mention that earlier because parental instinct is important to me. We all have to accept that the medical people are the experts but maybe parental instinct is not always taken into account and something that should have been treated on day one goes into day two....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Awareness, Prevention and Services for the Treatment of Sepsis: Discussion (15 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: It is really good to see this debate taking place because Irish society is not tuned in enough to the dangers of sepsis. Most people do not know how many die annually from it or get sick with it. These committee debates are important and it is good to see our guests’ sincere attitude to getting more publicity to this situation.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Roll-out and Delivery of Broadband in Rural Areas: Discussion (15 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I had to cover another meeting. I am going to keep this very brief because some of the questions were probably answered when I was away. First, I thank the Chair for his role when he was the Minister. In no small way his enthusiasm brought on this broadband project to the island and islands in leaps and bounds. I also acknowledge the officials who worked with him and those who are here...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Roll-out and Delivery of Broadband in Rural Areas: Discussion (15 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: No, I am not happy but there is probably not much that can be done. The Chair knows how frustrating it is to people who are a couple of hundred metres away from a network. There are a lot of houses grouped together and they cannot understand how it is down the road and it is going to take three or four years to get to them. Anyway, that is just the way it is.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Nov 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I will continue for a moment on the rail issue because I want to go back to the issue of the Sligo to Dublin route, particularly the Sligo to Connolly Station route, though I know it goes from Longford to Pearse Station as well. We still have a situation where you cannot get a cup of coffee or tea on that line. It is very disappointing that, months after it was reintroduced in other parts...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Nov 2023)
