Eoghan Murphy: Okay.

Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis: Nexus Phase (22 Jul 2015)

Eoghan Murphy: Okay. But can I ask just then, as a final question, would you ever ... have ever borrowed from Anglo, even if it wasn't on the most competitive ... or most competitively commercial terms available?

Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis: Nexus Phase (22 Jul 2015)

Eoghan Murphy: You probably would. Why?

Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis: Nexus Phase (22 Jul 2015)

Eoghan Murphy: Okay. And just my final question then, would you ever have sought to borrow from an Irish bank, been refused and gone to its subsidiary in the UK to borrow or vice versa?

Eoghan Murphy: No. Okay. Thank you.

Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis: Nexus Phase (22 Jul 2015)

Eoghan Murphy: Just to clarify, Chair, I mean if you could clarify it through the witness. If this in relation to a particular commercial decision-----

Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis: Nexus Phase (22 Jul 2015)

Eoghan Murphy: -----with the witnesses-----

Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis: Nexus Phase (23 Jul 2015)

Eoghan Murphy: Chairman, and thank you to both the witnesses. A lot of the areas I wanted to discuss have already been raised, so if I'm repeating myself please just let me know. Minister Bruton, in relation to regulation, in your opening statement, on page 4, you talk about a new structure for the Financial Regulator introduced in 2002. Is it true to say that you didn't feel it was a good structure for...

Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis: Nexus Phase (23 Jul 2015)

Eoghan Murphy: So, I mean, you had concerns about the model and you had concerns about their capabilities, so why did you trust their work?

Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis: Nexus Phase (23 Jul 2015)

Eoghan Murphy: Okay. When it comes to the 2007 election manifesto, I can't find anything in it relating to prudential regulation ... the need to improve our prudential regulation of the banks or really anything about the banking sector at all, in terms of substance. So, why not, if you had these concerns from 2002?

Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis: Nexus Phase (23 Jul 2015)

Eoghan Murphy: So, what was, I mean, Fine Gael's reaction then to Northern Rock? Again, the concerns are there and Northern Rock happens, it's queues in the streets in Dublin; did you approach the Financial Regulator or Central Bank directly at the time?

Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis: Nexus Phase (23 Jul 2015)

Eoghan Murphy: Okay. Taoiseach, did Fine Gael know about the dangers to the economy going into the '07 election? Did it see the risks ahead in terms of the banking sector, or the property sector?

Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis: Nexus Phase (23 Jul 2015)

Eoghan Murphy: I don't mean to cut you short, I'm short on time myself. I'm talking, though, about 2007 and the Opposition ... and Fine Gael, as the main Opposition party, going to the people. Did it raise ... or, sorry, did it actively decide not to raise the dangers of the economy or the potential risks that were coming down the line as part of that message to the people that goes on in a campaign?

Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis: Nexus Phase (23 Jul 2015)

Eoghan Murphy: Okay. We have the liquidity problems in the banks then coming to light in '07. We come then into September 2008 and, looking at the Dáil records immediately after the night of the guarantee, we see Michael Noonan, in the Dáil, questioning the solvency ... the potential risk to solvency of the banks. Why didn't Fine Gael, as a party, put that position forward? And why did Fine...
