Seanad: Order of Business (1 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: Who had?

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: In Leinster House.

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: Senator Brian Hayes congratulated the fire brigade and the Garda Síochána for policing and taking care of the fireworks displays last night and I wish to say the same for what happened where I come from. There was a much quieter display but I take his point about community groups obtaining a licence for such displays. There is no greater thrill for a young person than to witness a bonfire...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: He did not mention Longford.

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: Senator Bannon stated there was a lack of funding for the disabled person's grant and I agree with him. It is more the slowness with which the matter is approached rather than the money. Senator Mansergh said the PIAB has been a catalyst for lower insurance costs and I agree with him. He is very puzzled by the Basque peace process and the vote in Europe. Senator Norris referred to the...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: The Senator also asked for a rolling debate on health and this was echoed by Senator Glynn who also wants a debate on fireworks. When parents knew it was illegal to have fireworks, they kept a watch on their young people. Senator Higgins agreed with Senator Ormonde that this Chamber is a suitable venue to debate what is happening in Europe. We are clearing Mr. Bruton for this term and hope...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: I do not think the Taoiseach is looking for votes in the European Parliament. He is a very distinguished person who brought the constitution together in one piece. It is annoying that one would endeavour to undermine him in such a sneaky way and we on this side of the House will not allow it. He will acquit himself wonderfully. She can sulk in the corner if she wishes.

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: I apologise, a Chathaoirligh, I could not resist it. The awful thing about it all is that nobody seems to know it. Senator Jim Higgins and Deputy Kenny do not know about it. That is very odd.

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: I think it is interesting. Senator Quinn raised the issue of global warming and said there are advantages. He said the sharks were in our seas and that one could see dolphins and other sea mammals much closer to land because of the warmer seas. I seek the indulgence of the Chair to explain again that Mr. Bruton will be in the House next Wednesday.

Seanad: Housing Policy: Motion (1 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: Yes.

Seanad: Housing Policy: Motion (1 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: They have submitted applications and been rejected.

Seanad: Housing Policy: Motion (1 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: I welcome the Minister to the House. His willingness to come to this Chamber is remarkable and we appreciate it. I also thank the Progressive Democrats for this motion which gives us a chance to look at the whole planning issue. County Westmeath has the dubious honour of having the highest refusal rate for planning applications in the past year. That fact was paraded as if it is wonderful....

Seanad: Address by the European Union Ambassador to the United States (8 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: On behalf of the Seanad I welcome Ambassador Bruton to the House. His sense of curiosity and optimism are hugely engaging characteristics that have always imbued his work in this country, in Europe and now on a wider scale. I invite Senator Ormonde, our representative on the Joint Committee on European Affairs, to pose a question.

Seanad: Address by the European Union Ambassador to the United States (8 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: Yes.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: The Senator should not come down to Longford-Westmeath.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: He is already standing elsewhere.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: The Leader of the Opposition, Senator Brian Hayes, raised a matter I read about in a newspaper this morning. I was shocked by what I read. It was the worst case of sexual depravity I ever read about suffered by a young woman when walking down a street in Dublin. As the Senator said, passers by turned the other way, although there could be many reasons they did so. Senator Norris told us...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: None of us can report on it because it was laid before this House that there would be one report on it and that it would be then debated. We will not give interim reports on it.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: Neither will we give comfort to anyone. The matter must be proceeded with. Senator O'Toole spoke about a proposed referendum on the rights of children and the powerful paragraph in that respect which is in the 1916 Proclamation but which everyone believes is in the Constitution. He also spoke about the rights of citizens in society. Senator Ryan raised the matter of the report of the...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2006)

Mary O'Rourke: I am saying he is already standing as a candidate for the Dáil.
