Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Network: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (24 Jan 2018)

John O'Mahony: Mr. Nolan spoke about the private sector not providing the services. The point I am trying to get at is that it would be preferable if private enterprise were willing to provide the services with no risk to the taxpayer. We have just heard the story about the inordinate cost when public money is being used. Would it be better if the private sector were providing it?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Network: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (24 Jan 2018)

John O'Mahony: Since coming into this House, it is the only time I have heard complaints that the west and rural side of the west is getting higher grants than the east coast. That is historic. Along with Kerry, Mayo and all the other counties have the biggest percentage of non-national roads and they need that funding and they need more of it. That is the main point.

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Roads Maintenance Funding (30 Jan 2018)

John O'Mahony: I thank the Leas-Chathaoirleach for selecting this Commencement matter and I welcome the Minister, Deputy Ross. The Minister will be aware that I am a member of the transport committee, and the reason I have raised this matter is that the chief executive officer, CEO, of Transport Infrastructure Ireland raised it at the committee's meeting last week. He informed the committee that the...

John O'Mahony: I thank the Minister for his response. I welcome the increase in capital spending and the new projects which he announced yesterday. John O'Mahony: I welcome the opportunity to support the Bill which enables the sharing of vehicle registrations and data between EU member states, Iceland and Norway. It will be of assistance in combatting terrorism and serious crime. I note that the opt-in happened back in 2008, as the Minister said. One might wonder why it has taken until now to get to progressing the legislation. It is very welcome,...
