Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Bilateral Relations and the Activities of Boko Haram: Ambassador of Nigeria (4 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: I do understand that the girls were distributed, as the ambassador says. What happens now that there is co-operation? If one little girl was taken in Ireland we would move heaven and earth to return her to her family. How many of the 200 girls taken from their families have been returned? Has the Government done anything to return any of those girls?

Protection of Life in Pregnancy (Amendment) (Fatal Foetal Abnormalities) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (6 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: Stop.

Protection of Life in Pregnancy (Amendment) (Fatal Foetal Abnormalities) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (6 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: I have said on the record on many occasions inside and outside the Chamber that I want to see in legislation a measure that would provide a legal framework for the termination of cases of fatal foetal abnormality. I would go further by allowing for terminations in cases where there is a severe threat to the ongoing health of the mother, and indeed in cases of rape and incest. I realise that...

[5788/15]

[5542/15]

Topical Issue Debate: Special Educational Needs Service Provision (11 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: I am thankful for the opportunity to raise with the Minister for Education and Skills, Deputy Jan O'Sullivan, the overall shortage of secondary school places for children with autism spectrum disorder and the additional difficulties raised by the application of an admissions policy for ASD classes that protects a particular religious ethos. On the broader issue, currently on the south side...

Topical Issue Debate: Special Educational Needs Service Provision (11 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: I thank the Minister. I acknowledge that the number of places was increased by almost one third. That was very welcome. The Minister has put her finger on the fact in that there is unwillingness in some schools to set up new classes. Schools where there was not unwillingness already have as many special classes as they can cope with. The reality is that if schools will not co-operate, it...

Topical Issue Debate: Special Educational Needs Service Provision (11 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: I thank the Minister.

Education (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (11 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: As there is nobody present from the Technical Group, I will move back to the Government speakers. Deputy Conaghan is first and I understand he is sharing with Deputy O'Donovan. Is that agreed? Agreed.

Education (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (11 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: The next speaker is Deputy Penrose. I understand he is sharing time with Deputy Conlan, who is not present. There are ten minutes in this slot but Deputy Penrose may have more time available to him if Deputy Conlan does not appear.

Education (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (11 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: I apologise for interrupting but I misled the Deputy when I stated that he has only ten minutes. I understand he has a full 15 minute slot. He need not, therefore, go quite so fast in delivering the remainder of his contribution.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Priorities of Latvian Presidency of European Council: Latvian Ambassador to Ireland (11 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: I, too, welcome the ambassador, thank him for his presentation and wish Latvia well in its presidency, which is coming at a crucial time for Europe in general, on the economic and social front and on a security level. There are major trade agreements coming up, economic issues that affect all of us, very particular economic issues that affect Greece and the problems in Ukraine. Everybody...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Priorities of Latvian Presidency of European Council: Latvian Ambassador to Ireland (11 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: It is not a question. It is just to clarify that there was a loophole in Irish law that gave better rights to citizenship to third country citizens, such as people coming from Bangladesh or India, when they married an EU national than somebody from within the EU who married an EU national. I think that loophole has been closed so the incentive to traffic is not as great as it previously was.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Priorities of Latvian Presidency of European Council: Latvian Ambassador to Ireland (11 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: My point is that it is being used.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Priorities of Latvian Presidency of European Council: Latvian Ambassador to Ireland (11 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: I was not suggesting that it was not propaganda.

Order of Business (17 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: Is the Deputy asking a question?

Topical Issue Debate: Coastal Protection (17 Feb 2015)

Olivia Mitchell: The next matter for Topical Issues debate is in the name of Deputy Michael McNamara to the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, on coastal defence studies. The Minister of State, Deputy Harris, will take that matter. May I first offer Deputy Michael McNamara my good wishes on his recent engagement?
