- Seanad: Recognition of Irish Sign Language for the Deaf Community Bill 2016: Report and Final Stages (17 Oct 2017)
John O'Mahony: Recommittal in respect of amendment No. 10 is necessary as it creates a cost on public revenue. Amendments Nos. 10 and 11 are related and may be discussed together.
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2017)
John O'Mahony: I wish to raise a number of sporting issues. First, I welcome the announcement by the Olympic Council of Ireland yesterday of its termination of its deal with THG Sports, which was the ticket distributor that was in such controversy at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. It had done a deal with the former president, Pat Hickey, up to and including 2026.I compliment the newly-elected...

- Seanad: Child Care: Statements (18 Oct 2017)
John O'Mahony: Senators O'Reilly and Hopkins wanted to contribute but, by order of the House, only spokespersons may speak. I have no flexibility in that matter. I call Senator Higgins.

- Seanad: Coroners (Amendment) Bill 2016: Second Stage (18 Oct 2017)
John O'Mahony: Before I call on Senator Mac Lochlainn to open the debate, I should say that I am conscious that this Bill has its genesis in tragic events, the cause of which has been the subject of discussion elsewhere. While I do not want to constrain Members unduly in their contributions, it is very important that Senators should not comment on, criticise or make charges against a person outside the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: European Transport Sector: Discussion with European Commissioner (19 Oct 2017)
John O'Mahony: I thank the Chairman. Commissioner Bulc is very welcome to Ireland. I represented this committee in Tallinn recently, where Ms Bulc addressed the meetings of all of the transport committees throughout Europe. That meeting was very informative on the progress that is being made. Today, with Brexit in the offering, we are talking more about problems than solutions, but it is important...
- Seanad: Driving Test Waiting Times: Statements (25 Oct 2017)
John O'Mahony: From listening to the Minister and the Senators, there is clearly a problem. The waiting times are not acceptable. As the Minister noted, ten weeks is the objective. It must be addressed urgently. I understand that a theory test can be had within ten days. I do not know the reason for this. There is obviously more people applying for tests but it does not explain the whole bottleneck....
- Seanad: International Protection (Family Reunification) (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (8 Nov 2017)
John O'Mahony: Next Tuesday.
- Seanad: Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015: Committee Stage (Resumed) (8 Nov 2017)
John O'Mahony: I very much welcome the progress of the Bill so far and the tone in which it is being debated on all sides. Labelling was discussed. There seem to be some anomalies and I ask for them to be examined. A vineyard in Italy is expected to put the labels we have put into legislation on its wine. Similarly, in the context of airports, if people are leaving the country, that should be looked at...
- Seanad: Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015: Committee Stage (Resumed) (8 Nov 2017)
John O'Mahony: Senator Coffey said that we need a sense of balance. Senator Black said we need to progress this legislation. I agree with both of them and I believe it is possible to do both. I support some of the amendments put forward with regard to the timelines for implementation of structural changes. I believe one year is too tight. It is possible to get the result that everybody wants if we hold...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Noxious Weeds (9 Nov 2017)
John O'Mahony: I welcome the Minister of State. Since this issue is not within her area of responsibility, I appeal to her to speak directly to the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Deputy Heather Humphreys, who, I understand, is dealing with the problems posed by Japanese knotweed, to which I was alerted in recent times when travelling around County Mayo and elsewhere in the west. I saw...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Noxious Weeds (9 Nov 2017)
John O'Mahony: I thank the Minister of State for her reply. While I acknowledge initiatives are in place, there is a need for an overall plan and education on this matter. Japanese knotweed thrives on disturbance. People think they are sorting it out when they cut it back. That is why there needs to be education on managing it. If we are doing it in a half-hearted way, we are throwing good money away....

John O'Mahony: The Senator must conclude.
- Seanad: Defence Forces (Veterans Lapel Badge) Bill 2017: Second Stage (22 Nov 2017)
John O'Mahony: I am pleased to have this opportunity to pay tribute to the Defence Forces. We are all very proud of their service during State occasions, including last year's 1916 commemorations. We are proud of the work of our Naval Service in the Mediterranean. As Senator Wilson said, we are very proud of the troops who come back from overseas peacekeeping duties. As citizens, sometimes we can take the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: General Scheme of the Irish Aviation Authority (Amendment) Bill 2017: Discussion (22 Nov 2017)
John O'Mahony: I thank the witnesses for coming before the committee to speak on this issue. I concur with the Chairman's opening remarks regarding the important function carried out by the Irish Aviation Authority. I want to follow on from the Chairman's question on the practical implications. Mr. Gallagher has explained why it is necessary, but what are the practical implications of what this will mean...
