Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jul 2015)

Denis O'Donovan: I am somewhat relieved that I am not on Senator Conway's panel. He gave a great welcome to my good friend and former colleague in Dáil Éireann, the mayor of Clare, James Breen. On a more serious note, even though it may be impractical to have such a debate before the recess, I ask the Leader for a debate with the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Deputy...

It helped shine a light on this issue, which we will debate later today. In terms of farm safety, we have the Health and Safety...

In accordance with Standing Order 118, it is deemed to have passed its First, Second and Third Stages in the Seanad and is placed on the Order Paper for Report Stage. On the question, "That the Bill be received for final consideration", the Minister may explain the purpose of the amendments made by the Dáil. This is looked...

Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (15 Jul 2015)

Denis O'Donovan: I thank the Tánaiste and Minister for Social Protection, Deputy Joan Burton, and welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Kevin Humphreys. For the record, group one, on which the Tánaiste spoke, relates to the subject matter of amendment Nos. 1, 4 to 6, inclusive, and 16 to 18, inclusive. As it is technically Report Stage, Senators can only speak once on each grouping. The only...

Seanad: Seanad Public Consultation Committee Report on Farm Safety: Motion (15 Jul 2015)

Denis O'Donovan: I am very encouraged by what I have heard from the Minister. It is important that we had this debate. It is like a big 600-piece jigsaw puzzle that a young person is trying to put together. The work we have done through our committee is just one small piece of that jigsaw puzzle. We, the Minister, his Department and the organisations concerned all have a role to play. The Minister was...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jul 2015)

Denis O'Donovan: When the House returns in the autumn, I ask the Leader to arrange a debate on an issue my good colleague, Senator Ned O'Sullivan, raised last year. Some people scoffed at his remarks that seagulls were endangering society and taking food out of children's mouths, etc. Some in the media thought they were a bit of a joke, but the Senator is usually very level-headed and seldom flippant in his...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jul 2015)

Denis O'Donovan: I am asking for a debate on this important issue. Seagulls are becoming a nuisance and pest. We should consider the request made by Senator Ned O'Sullivan last year that we have a cull of this vicious seabird. Seagulls usually live at sea and nest on cliffs, but they are now invading towns and villages.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jul 2015)

Denis O'Donovan: This is a very serious issue. One sees seagulls attacking the food of children who are eating fish and chips. I ask the Leader to consider having a debate on this issue in the forthcoming term.
