- Seanad: Aircraft Noise (Dublin Airport) Regulation Bill 2018: Second Stage (3 Apr 2019)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: I would like to add my voice to the concerns about the development of Dublin Airport and the additional runway, which I have been raising continually since my election to the Seanad. I refer to the effect on the surrounding areas, specifically St. Margaret's, Portmarnock, Kinsealy and Malahide. As the Minister knows, I lived in Portmarnock for several years. I invited the Minister to my...

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I welcome the Minister for Education and Skills to the House and thank him for taking this Commencement matter. I am raising with him once again the schools building project status of St. Molaga’s senior national school in Balbriggan, north County Dublin. I have raised it before on several occasions, the last time being late September. I am looking for an update on this project to...

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I want to know how long will the process take to get the project manager in place. I know the framework has been completed but what kind of timescale is involved? Is it one month, five months or six months? Once the project manager is in place, how long will the tender for the design stage take?

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Recruitment and Retention of Social Workers: Discussion (Resumed) (10 Apr 2019)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: I thank the Chairman. Before I ask my question, I want to point out an inaccuracy in regard to solicitors' training. I am a qualified solicitor. When solicitors are on their work placement, they are not qualified solicitors at that point. They are doing their work placement or traineeship in between their professional practice courses in Blackhall Place.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Recruitment and Retention of Social Workers: Discussion (Resumed) (10 Apr 2019)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: No, that is not the case.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Recruitment and Retention of Social Workers: Discussion (Resumed) (10 Apr 2019)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: They do their academic training between pockets of a traineeship that lasts two years, meaning that they do a couple of months here and there. Do the delegates believe the pay levels of new entrants are sufficient? Some 90% of social workers are female and there is a gender pay gap in Ireland. Traditionally, female dominated professions are low paid. Do the delegates have any comment to...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Recruitment and Retention of Social Workers: Discussion (Resumed) (10 Apr 2019)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: As I have just been called to attend a vote in the Seanad, I must leave. I apologise, but I will look at the answers the delegates will give.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Recruitment and Retention of Social Workers: Discussion (Resumed) (10 Apr 2019)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: The gender pay gap arises because women experience a loss of salary as they work their way through their careers on account of not being able to avail of promotional opportunities. The delegates say, however, that there are no promotional opportunities in their profession. This is very serious and something I would like to see addressed.

- Seanad: Parental Leave (Amendment) Bill 2017: Report and Final Stages (8 May 2019)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: This is a good day for this House in terms of the cross-party effort to have the Bill passed. It was originally a Social Democrats Bill. As outlined by Senator Ardagh, Fianna Fáil took it in its Private Members' time, as did the Labour Party and the Government. It is a good example of a cross-party effort. There is a little disappointment at the commencement date being September...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Women's Aid Impact Report 2018: Discussion (8 May 2019)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: I thank Ms Regan. Like my colleague, I was horrified by those statistics. As a family law practitioner in a former life, I am well used to the corridors of Dolphin House and what goes on there. It is not unfamiliar territory. I will ask all my questions and then perhaps we can interact after that. Ms Regan referred to refuges and their inability to facilitate women. Is there a standard...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Women's Aid Impact Report 2018: Discussion (8 May 2019)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: There was a significant cut in family law legal aid fees, as I am sure Ms Regan is aware. This cut did not extend to the criminal legal aid system.
