- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Update on Children and Youth Affairs: Discussion with Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (19 Apr 2013)
Jillian van Turnhout: The Minister raised the child deaths reports, which I raised at a committee meeting a few weeks ago. At one of our first meetings, the Minister committed to giving us the reports from the Helen Buckley review group, that is, that we would get them as they came out. We have not got them and I know a message was to be sent to the Minister's Department.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Update on Children and Youth Affairs: Discussion with Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (19 Apr 2013)
Jillian van Turnhout: We have not got them. We hoped that as a committee we would automatically get them, so perhaps that could be looked at. On youth work funding, I very much welcome the Minister's assurances that there are no plans to transfer the schemes to the City of Dublin VEC. Will she also confirm that there is not a plan for two new schemes for youth work funding to replace the current youth work...

- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2013)
Jillian van Turnhout: At the weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Scouting Ireland delegate conference, which brought together 800 delegates representing 40,000 members. Two motions which were voted on will be of interest to the House. One was on Scouting Ireland's fears the proposed sale of Coillte will threaten its open access policy. Unbeknownst to me until I arrived, another motion had been tabled...

The Bill will transpose some important provisions of the EU anti-trafficking directive into domestic legislation, which is very much welcome. I thank the Minister of State for outlining the Bill's contents. I welcome the inclusion of a definition of "forced labour" based on the International Labour Organisation Convention No. 29 of 1930...

- Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Mr. Seán Kelly, MEP (30 Apr 2013)
Jillian van Turnhout: I welcome Mr. Seán Kelly, MEP. There are many aspects of his work that I would like to raise and commend him on. Perhaps I shall limit myself to crediting him for his work on the committee called Delegations for Relations with the United States. Senator Cummins mentioned the EU-US trade agreement and a number of Senators are following its progress. I also commend Mr. Kelly on his...
- Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Ms Nessa Childers, MEP (1 May 2013)
Jillian van Turnhout: I welcome Ms Childers to the House. I wish to remark on her admirable commitment to transparency and accountability, especially in the area of appointments. In her words today she showed clearly that is something she practices. It is something we need to formalise more, within national as well as European institutions. I also note her 20 years' experience as a mental health professional,...

- Seanad: Charities Regulation: Motion (1 May 2013)
Jillian van Turnhout: We are having a very good debate on this and we could say we are all in agreement and that the word on this is "consensus". However, knowing Senator O'Brien as I do, I feel she would like the word to be "urgency" and to feel we are bringing an entrepreneurial spirit to this motion. It is good that we have consensus, but is that good enough? It is not, and that is the reason Senator O'Brien...

She has an extremely strong record on human rights and equality issues which she demonstrated again today. I would single her out for her work on...
