Seanad: Order of Business. (22 May 2003)

David Norris: That does not matter. He did in the sense that he was honourable and decent in what he said. He was right. Let us have clarity in language when talking about education. There is no such a thing as free fees. A thing is either a fee or it is free. The abolition of fees is a contradiction in terms or an oxymoron.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 May 2003)

David Norris: This House played a significant role in assisting the people of East Timor to get their independence but it has not ended there. Indonesia is now repeating the dose, with very little world attention, in the province of Ache where similar atrocities are being committed. I will leave the details for a future debate. I ask the Leader to arrange a debate on foreign policy which would include this...

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 May 2003)

David Norris: It represents a diminishing of everybody in this country. It is laughable that we should turn to this kind of mockery when we so often refer to the fact that one of the former residents of that house is the only woman whose picture hangs in Leinster House, yet we treat her family's quandary with contempt. It is a pity. We should examine this issue and the results of our lack of support for...

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 May 2003)

David Norris: Had they no shame to behave like thugs in a place called Omagh?

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 May 2003)

David Norris: Was he emotional?

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 May 2003)

David Norris: I am not sure how appropriate it is to continue the prayer because there are large numbers of people from different religions. Perhaps it would be better in Latin. As I have said before, there is a certain level of hypocrisy about it. As I am a regular churchgoer, this is not some kind of atheist position. There are many atheists, Jewish people and Muslims in this country.

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 May 2003)

David Norris: We have gone through that already. I support Senator Higgins in saying it is very important for us to give the maximum backing to the two Ministers. The Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Deputy Dermot Ahern, seems to have held the line pretty well. When attempts were made to abolish the Irish Box altogether, he simply refused and indicated he would veto this....

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 May 2003)

David Norris: Perhaps Mr. O'Leary's name can be removed from the record. Would that be in order?

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 May 2003)

David Norris: I withdraw the mention of Mr. O'Leary immediately. I wish to seek a debate on foreign affairs, with particular reference to the disastrous situation in the Congo. The Government has been misinformed because Ugandan troops and militia are still in that unfortunate country and they are raping its natural resources.

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 May 2003)

David Norris: I may not have been quoted accurately regarding Lissadell House last week—

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 May 2003)

David Norris: The Student Prince is an operetta. The Prince is by Machiavelli.

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 May 2003)

David Norris: It is a very good operetta.

Seanad: Sustaining Progress: Statements. (27 May 2003)

David Norris: Bravo. Well spoken.

Seanad: Order of Business. (28 May 2003)

David Norris: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business. (28 May 2003)

David Norris: I join my colleagues who have asked for a debate on Iraq. It is significant that Mr. Rumsfeld, who I believe stands convicted of being a war criminal, should have made such a point as reported at 7 a.m. on "Morning Ireland". It was a virtual admission that there were no weapons of mass destruction. It was the lead item in the news headlines but by 9 a.m. had dropped to third or fourth place....

Seanad: Order of Business. (28 May 2003)

David Norris: He was a Beatle – a group in the 1960s. Very good, too.
