- Seanad: A Strategy for Cancer Control in Ireland: Statements. (28 Jun 2006)
Camillus Glynn: Go on. The Senator should not be so hard on himself.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (4 Jul 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I support Senator Feighan's remarks about the use of cannabis which I, along with other Members, have raised previously. Cannabis has been glorified by certain people. If I remember correctly, a Dáil candidate in Dublin approximately 20 years ago had the use of cannabis as one of his plans for election.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (4 Jul 2006)
Camillus Glynn: He was an Independent.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (4 Jul 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I would welcome a debate on this issue, which is so important that it was the subject of a headline on at least one national newspaper today. It must be remembered that cannabis is a gateway drug with some very serious components that can affect mental and physical health. We need a debate at the earliest possible opportunity on the use of cannabis.
- Seanad: Hepatitis C Compensation Tribunal (Amendment) Bill 2006: Second Stage. (5 Jul 2006)
Camillus Glynn: Whoever coined the adage that the cure is worse than the disease, this is a typical case. There is no doubt that many people are suffering as a result of contaminated blood products. Unfortunately, what has been done cannot be undone. However, we must do our best, as legislators, to in some way address the situation in so far as is possible. What happened with hepatitis C is the greatest...
- Seanad: Hepatitis C Compensation Tribunal (Amendment) Bill 2006: Second Stage. (5 Jul 2006)
Camillus Glynn: It is not right to mention a Member of the other House.
- Seanad: Hepatitis C Compensation Tribunal (Amendment) Bill 2006: Second Stage. (5 Jul 2006)
Camillus Glynn: It is totally out of order.
- Seanad: Business of Seanad. (6 Jul 2006)
Camillus Glynn: Well said.
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (6 Jul 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I support Senator Finucane's call for a debate on orthodontic services. Following the publication of a report on this issue by a sub-committee of the Joint Committee on Health and Children, it is timely to have a debate on the matter. I am aware there is a problem with this service in the mid-west. I am pleased to say, however, that because of the proactive approach of a consultant...
- Seanad: Hepatitis C Compensation Tribunal (Amendment) Bill 2006: Committee and Remaining Stages. (6 Jul 2006)
Camillus Glynn: This section deals with the reality of life for those affected by this terrible condition. That our primary concern should be the welfare of the victims is given de facto recognition in this section.
- Seanad: Hepatitis C Compensation Tribunal (Amendment) Bill 2006: Committee and Remaining Stages. (6 Jul 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I thank the Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, Deputy Tim O'Malley, the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children, the officials, the Clerk, the Seanad staff and all involved in the passing of this legislation on all sides of the House. I compliment the four groups concerned on their efforts and communications with all sides of both Houses. This is a very...
- Seanad: Office of Tobacco Control Annual Report 2005: Statements (27 Sep 2006)
Camillus Glynn: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit go dtà an Teach. We have rarely had a victory such as that represented by the Public Health (Tobacco) Act. Both Houses should be complimented on having brought forward this legislation unanimously and with the support of trade unions that were conscious of the safety of their members in the workplace. It is hardly any wonder that the Public Health...
- Seanad: UN Committee Report on Children in Ireland: Statements (11 Oct 2006)
Camillus Glynn: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit go dtà an Teach. I welcome the opportunity to speak on the progress report on the position of children in Ireland. While I agree with Senator Terry that the Minister of State, Deputy Brian Lenihan, needs to be complimented on his work, it does not matter in what chair the Minister of State sits at the Cabinet table, whether it is high or low, the Senator...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Oct 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I support Senator Kitt's comments about the Bank of Ireland closing a number of branches in small towns. This drives a coach and four through the concept of rural development. It is important to have a bank in a small town, particularly for the local business and farming communities. The House should call on the banks to reconsider this policy. It is a self-centred policy that does...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Oct 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I am. It would be useful. I have spoken to several Members of the House about this and they would agree that the concept of the visiting committee should be re-examined and re-introduced.
- Seanad: Mental Health Commission Report 2005: Statements (19 Oct 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I welcome the Minister of State and the opportunity to speak on the annual report of the Mental Health Commission and the report of the Inspector of Mental Health Services. It has been a significant year for mental health in many ways. The Minister of State touched on this in the course of his contribution. I welcome, in particular, the additional resources devolved to the psychiatric...
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2006)
Camillus Glynn: An editorial in last Monday's Irish Independent had another go at local councillors and asked whether what they do is democracy or "codocracy". This article is media codology. It is obvious that the writer, like previous writers, knows little or nothing about what a local authority member does. A number of Members, possibly including Senator Leyden and I, asked the Minister for Health and...
