- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Wards of Court: Discussion (11 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: Has the Committee of Public Accounts challenged the fact that the Comptroller and Auditor General has not been engaged in this area?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Wards of Court: Discussion (11 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: Given our experience with the Comptroller and Auditor General around his workings with the NAMA issues, we have found him to be very good. We can progress it from our end as much as we can as to why he has not being engaged because it looks to me as if it would be very helpful.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Wards of Court: Discussion (11 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: I thank Ms Farrell.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Wards of Court: Discussion (11 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: The NAMA legislation is somewhat vague. NAMA claims a certain private status in its work, yet everything it has done can be scrutinised by the Comptroller and Auditor General despite that fact. It is one of the reasons it felt no obligation to provide a social dividend.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Wards of Court: Discussion (11 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: I thank the witnesses for the presentation. I would not blame them for not anticipating the severity of the crash as I did not do so either. I do not know anybody who did and most of the clever comments came afterwards. I did not hear much of it before the crash. Ms Mary Farrell made a presentation in the previous session. She was not saying the money could have been invested better...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Wards of Court: Discussion (11 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: Any information they want on what happened in the past will be made available.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Wards of Court: Discussion (11 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: It was mentioned in the submission that a completely unsolicited and independent review carried out by Key Capital and PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2014 found things were done properly. Why did they do it if it was completely unsolicited?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Wards of Court: Discussion (11 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: Most would agree the big organisations have a pretty incestuous club and it is very hard to find someone who can take an independent position on most matters in Ireland. Key Capital and PricewaterhouseCoopers are big players with vested interests in many different areas. If in the case of the Comptroller and Auditor General not being given permission by the Attorney General to adopt an...
- Other Questions: Small and Medium Enterprises Supports (12 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: Why? It started late.
- Other Questions: Job Creation (12 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: 13. To ask the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation the measures she is taking to address the below average growth of foreign direct investment job creation, the lack of progress in stimulating indigenous industry and the deficit of IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland activity in County Wexford; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [43170/17]
- Other Questions: Job Creation (12 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: As the Tánaiste is probably aware, the south east is the only region not meeting the Action Plan for Jobs target of bringing unemployment to within 1% of the national average. Within the south east, Wexford is performing worst of all the counties. In 2015, only 2.4% of the net IDA Ireland supported jobs created were in the south east despite the region making up almost 11% of the...
- Other Questions: Job Creation (12 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: I have been listening to replies such as this since before the Minister's time. The fact remains that over 16% of the labour force in Wexford is still on the live register. Most of the jobs that have come on stream in the past 18 months have been part-time and of low quality. Low job quality is holding the region back severely. Income tax returns for Wexford and the south-east region are...
- Other Questions: Job Creation (12 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: I thank the Leas-Cheann Comhairle. He is too good.
- Written Answers — Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Job Initiatives (12 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: 33. To ask the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation the measures she is taking to address the low job quality in new employment growth in County Wexford; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [43169/17]
- Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Direct Provision System (12 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: 88. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the progress made in rolling out self catering and shared kitchen facilities in the Ballyhaunis, Athlone, Kinsale Road and Clonakilty Lodge centres similar to the facilities available at the Mosney direct provision centre; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [43241/17]
- Other Questions: Child and Family Agency Funding (17 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: 42. To ask the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs if she is satisfied that the funding increase afforded to Tusla in budget 2018 will improve the current functioning within Tusla with regard to its child protection policy and with regard to operations of family resource centres throughout the country; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [43743/17]
- Other Questions: Child and Family Agency Funding (17 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: The Minister for Finance announced €40.6 million extra for Tusla in the budget. Presumably the vast majority of this increased funding will be swallowed up by the effects of the introduction of mandatory reporting of child abuse concerns from January onwards. How much additional funding in reality will be made available to improve the fulfilment of Tusla's child protection policy?...
- Other Questions: Child and Family Agency Funding (17 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: That sounds good. I hope it turns out as well as the Minister would hope. As she is aware, Professor Geoffrey Shannon was very critical of the lack of serious out of hours services. He pointed out that because of the lack of facilities available to Tusla, the private sector was being relied upon, especially during the out of hours period. He pointed out that, especially with respect to...
- Other Questions: Child and Family Agency Funding (17 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: With regard to resources, there are five family resource centres in Wexford, namely, in Gorey, Raheen, Taghmon, Ramsgrange and the Southend centre in Wexford town. They are all located in areas where there is significant need. I have been told there is talk of them each getting an extra €10,000. They have said the extra €10,000 would certainly be welcome but it would merely...
- Written Answers — Department of Children and Youth Affairs: Child and Family Agency Services (17 Oct 2017)
Mick Wallace: 49. To ask the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs if she is satisfied with the overall performance of Tusla; her plans to conduct a review into the operations of Tusla with regard to its child protection policy, in view of the report by the UN Special Rapporteur (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter.
