- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Large-scale Capital Projects: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (14 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: Yes. TII deals with metro and Luas. The Galway light rail system has been on the boil since I was a boy in Salthill and is still on the boil. The bypass is constantly being chucked out. We get so far and-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Large-scale Capital Projects: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (14 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: Is it light rail and not metro?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Large-scale Capital Projects: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (14 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: I have a final question. Mr. Walsh mentioned planning. When I hear the word "planning" I feel it would be great if the ground opened up and swallowed us all. We seem to be extremely poor at engagement with the elected representative local authority members - not with the local authority itself. We ultimately find ourselves in the situation where there are objections to planning. One...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Large-scale Capital Projects: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (14 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: I appreciate that.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Large-scale Capital Projects: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (14 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: If I am hearing Mr. Walsh correctly, if TII is operating in a particular area - we will say County Cork for the hell of it - it will deal with the executive of Cork County Council and that council's planning office. However, it is up to the county council to decide whether the actual elected representatives on Cork County Council should attend. Does Mr. Walsh see anything wrong with that?...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Large-scale Capital Projects: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (14 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: As Mr. Walsh can imagine, as Members of the Seanad, we get complaints from time to time that county councillors feel bypassed and excluded when decisions are being made so I am glad to hear that TII is happy enough to have them attend and to listen to what they have to say.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Large-scale Capital Projects: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (14 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: I will leave it at that. I thank Mr. Walsh and Mr. O'Neill very much.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: General Scheme of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2023: Discussion (20 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: Can I interrupt for a moment? What Mr. Guinan is telling me is what any normal representative body does.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: General Scheme of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2023: Discussion (20 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: My colleague, Senator McDowell, and others have raised the matter of the oversight body. RACO and PDFORRA were both members of the previous oversight body. There was no problem I was aware of and I have to put on record that this committee should insist there is counterbalance on the oversight body and that the representative bodies have membership, along with the Secretary General-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: General Scheme of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2023: Discussion (20 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: Yes, or the Secretary General should leave and then there would be no requirement for any counterbalance. However, I would favour RACO and PDFORRA being members of the oversight body.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: General Scheme of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2023: Discussion (20 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: It is important to say that I constantly get comments about the fact that people such as myself and my colleagues Deputies Berry and Stanton and Senator Wilson are negative about the Defence Forces. We have the representative bodies here this evening. Their final statement this evening was about the wonderful career that Defence Force membership offers people. We need to compliment them on...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (20 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: I suppose they are in County Tipperary.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (20 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: I am not surprised.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (20 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: At the outset, I congratulate the Deputy Leader. From working with her in recent years, I genuinely feel that she has shown herself to be an extremely independent person and an independent thinker. She has been rewarded by being selected and now she has to go and do the hard work. I wish her well in that. On the referendum, I am becoming more and more concerned at what I believe are the...
- Seanad: Special Measures in the Public Interest (Derrybrien Wind Farm) Bill 2023: Second Stage (20 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: Before I launch into what I have to say, I understand planning permission would be required to remove the current Derrybrien wind generators. I will be objecting to that planning permission and taking this as far as I possibly can. I disagree with some of what the previous speaker said. We are talking about changing a law, not ignoring the law. Today, we heard a detailed and valid argument...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (21 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: I, too, send my condolences to the family of Michael O'Regan. I met him only a few days before he passed away at SuperValu in Ballinteer. He was as feisty as ever and in great form. Everything the Cathaoirleach said about him epitomises the man he was. He would always stop and have a chat in the corridors of Leinster House. Reading the British newspapers this morning, I must conclude...

Gerard Craughwell: I second the amendment.
- Seanad: Local Government (Mayor of Limerick) and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2023: Report and Final Stages (21 Feb 2024)
Gerard Craughwell: I just want to say a few brief words. The Minister of State is a proud Limerick man. I have known him for many years. This is a great day for him. He is driving home a Bill for an elected mayor in his city, one of the finest cities in Ireland. I know him from way back. His commitment to Limerick was never in question at any time. He has taken amendments on board and modified the Bill...
