Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2014)

Paul Coghlan: I have done so in the past. There is no danger of that invasive species taking it over.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Jul 2014)

Paul Coghlan: I welcome the continuing fall in the unemployment figures. I also welcome the substantial and packed programme of the Taoiseach today relating to economic promotion in Germany. It is so important for the country. For example, he will be addressing 2,000 leading German business people and he is taking part in a separate trade and investment event. I believe all this activity, together with...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Jul 2014)

Paul Coghlan: That is a lovely hotel as well but I am referring to the German-owned hotels and the strong trade links that exist. I have witnessed this myself having met people who come from Germany to visit Liebherr Ireland Limited and who are doing business with the company from all over the world. What the Taoiseach has done today is of tremendous value and importance and I greatly welcome it.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (8 Jul 2014)

Paul Coghlan: I am delighted with today's good news story. I join all colleagues in congratulating our good friend and colleague, Senator Daragh O'Brien, on his birthday. I also congratulate Deputy Joan Burton on becoming leader of the Labour Party. I also welcome H.E. Mr. Dominick Chilcott, the British ambassador, to the Chamber. Thanks to Senator Feargal Quinn, and I am pleased to follow on this, we...

Seanad: Competition and Consumer Protection Bill 2014: Second Stage (8 Jul 2014)

Paul Coghlan: I welcome the Minister to the House and thank him for his comprehensive overview of these proposals. The Bill aims to merge the Competition Authority and the National Consumer Agency into a new pro-consumer body. This reform is long overdue and part of the Government's programme to merge regulatory agencies and secure necessary efficiencies. The Bill seeks to update competition law in a...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2014)

Paul Coghlan: To pick up the issue raised by Senator O'Brien, there is something seriously wrong with a system that allows more than 400,000 people to buy tickets for a concert without giving an all-clear under the licensing system. Equally, however, it is wrong in our democracy that any one man, such as the individual to whom the Senator referred, should have so much power without any checks and balances...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2014)

Paul Coghlan: It is wrong to suggest that the Taoiseach has suddenly become interested in rescuing the Garth Brooks situation. Yesterday evening, the Office of the Taoiseach or the Government received a direct communication on the matter from Mr. Brooks's organisation. As I stated yesterday, there are two things wrong in our democracy. First, 400,000 people were allowed to buy tickets for functions that...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Jul 2014)

Paul Coghlan: I, too, wish to congratulate the new Ministers and Ministers of State on their appointments. I commiserate with those who have not been reappointed. Following remarks made earlier, I have no desire to revisit any of last week's business, which is last week's business and is gone as far as I am concerned. However, I would like to say sorry, if I should be saying sorry, to any Senators,...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Jul 2014)

Paul Coghlan: I am unsure whether gagging of doctors was involved. That may be subject to interpretation, and negotiation may be required. Anyway, it is above my pay grade and I do not wish to get into it.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Jul 2014)

Paul Coghlan: I am merely the servant of this House as Whip.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Jul 2014)

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Jul 2014)

Paul Coghlan: We have a harmonious and collegial atmosphere in the House, if I may say so. As we head into the summer recess at the end of this week on Friday or whenever - hopefully we will not have to come back for a day next week-----
