Seán Sherlock: I welcome the Commissioner, Mr. Moscovici, to our committee. I will start by making a political point. As a former Member of Parliament and a former Minister, the Commissioner will take a reading from this meeting of the Irish Parliament's Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, and Taoiseach today. The mood thus far is one of a degree of scepticism about this proposal because too...

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (25 Jan 2017)

Seán Sherlock: The proposal is agreed by the members. In discussing the petition, it is clear there are pure market forces driving the cost of driving lessons. One has some sympathy for the plight of the individual driver in this instance because of the cost of the lessons. The committee has articulated a view but is limited in its scope. If the members wish to comment, they are welcome to do so.

The petitioner seeks to amend the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 to reduce the maximum average working week for many employees to 40 hours per week. It is currently at 48...

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (25 Jan 2017)

Seán Sherlock: Members are unanimous in their view that there is a role for the committee. There was a legitimate expectation in our interaction with the working group of committee Chairmen that its role would be expanded, that it would not seek to duplicate the work of other committees but would work to complement it. If an issue of public policy arose at this committee, for instance, it was to liaise...

Seán Sherlock: The key point is that we are not trying to invade the pitches of others, so to speak, but we are trying to complement the work of other committees. We could play a very relevant role in that respect.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (25 Jan 2017)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: EU State Aid Rules - Investigation into Preferential Tax Rulings: European Commissioner for Competition (31 Jan 2017)

The Commission has not been silent on the question of whether other member states or other countries have a call on the magical figure of €13 billion.
