Seanad: Report of the Working Group on Seanad Reform 2015: Statements (5 May 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: The Leas-Chathaoirleach will not be surprised that I seek an extension of time. This is, in one phrase, une oeuvre formidable. Former Senators O'Toole, Manning and Magnier have done well and have struck a good balance throughout. They have achieved what the Irish public wanted - a good strike forward for universal suffrage. I support the recommendation that 30 seats would be elected by the...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Disability Services Provision (12 May 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. I ask that the Minister of State at the Department of Health with special responsibility for disability, mental health and older people, Deputy Kathleen Lynch, make a statement on when the long-promised mobility allowance scheme will be made available for people with disabilities. I propose to outline some of the hardships being suffered by...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Disability Services Provision (12 May 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: While I think the Minister of State for his reply, it was no better than the answer I received from the private secretary last January. The Minister of State really is putting it on record here that four and a half months later there has been no movement. That is not good enough. The Minister of State now is telling me that the health (transport support) Bill will come to the House some...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Disability Services Provision (12 May 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: That is great, but has he concern for those who are not in receipt of payments under any scheme? I seek the exact date and wish to ascertain what concern the Minister of State has for those people who are not in any scheme. I am cross about this issue because I am fed up with it.

Seanad: Yeats 2015: Statements (9 Jun 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I wish to start by thanking Senator Maurice Cummins for scheduling the statements, which are very significant in the week in which we will celebrate the 150th birthday of W.B. Yeats which takes place on Saturday. It is a very special time for us in Galway. I note in particular what Senator Lorraine Higgins has said. We will reopen Thoor Ballylee, Yeats’s ancestral home this Saturday....

Seanad: Yeats 2015: Statements (9 Jun 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: We have the opportunity to co-market Sligo, Dublin and Galway through the Wild Atlantic Way and let us do that. I commend Senator O'Keeffe on the year she has had and long may the work continue. However, we should not forget Thoor Ballylee as part of the national picture.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jun 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: That will never happen in this country.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jun 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: The Taoiseach, Deputy Enda Kenny, said that if we show him the blockages in a system, the Government would unblock them with respect to jobs, businesses or people's livelihoods. There are certainly blockages in the system and Irish Water is presenting a serious blockage if it is affecting business. We have a worrying issue developing in Oranmore, as Irish Water has stated it is to start...

Fidelma Healy Eames: This motion calls on the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to exercise her discretion under the National Monuments (Amendment) Act 2004 and give permission to extend Annaghdown graveyard, County Galway, in light of the impending crisis, given that only one burial plot remains, and the lack of funding available to Galway County Council to purchase another suitable site.

Seanad: Commencement Matters: National Heritage Plan (11 Jun 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I thank the Minister. Everything he said has been documented to me as well in a list of 22 actions taken by the local committee. We are gravely aware of the situation. With respect to the Minister, the answer is disappointing and he will appreciate why. My question to the Minister was whereto next after one more death in the community. Where will the local people be buried? Given their...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jun 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I listened to the testimonies of Clerys workers and franchise holders this morning as I came to Dublin. The question that struck me was how the Minister is helping Clerys workers and those affected by the announcement of the sudden closure. Is the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Deputy Richard Bruton, providing leadership on this issue? Two types of help are needed here. The...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jun 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Five of those teenagers had independent supervisors and rooms, and in three of those cases it was for stress. I checked the figures with the Department of Education and Science and there has been a 20% increase in independent rooms and supervisors in the past two years. That is a huge increase. The Minister needs to do an analysis on that to determine for what those rooms are being used....
