Mary Harney: Trolleys in accident and emergency departments are not counted as inpatient beds or day beds. However, a trolley in a day ward which is used in the course of a day procedure is counted as a day place. My Department carried out a bed census in 2003 which identified 313 trolleys in acute hospitals which were being used in day wards to treat patients as day cases.
