Gerard Craughwell: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Policing, Security and Community Safety Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages (24 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: I am not going to take a lot of the Minister's time. When she gets to the regulations, I ask that she consider providing that a member of the local authority be the chair. I will leave it at that. There has been enough said today.

Seanad: Policing, Security and Community Safety Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages (24 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: I am wondering about allowing local authority members to come in. The Minister said that any local authority member who wants to sit in on the committee can do so. Will they have voting rights or will voting rights be restricted to the original number?

Seanad: Policing, Security and Community Safety Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages (24 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: They will have full voting rights.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Capital Projects and Operations: Iarnród Éireann (24 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: I am delighted to see that the Leas-Chathaoirleach has covered most of our electorate but he missed out on one or two.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Capital Projects and Operations: Iarnród Éireann (24 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: Councillor Leonard from Wicklow talks about the Rosslare line. I understand now that the train is so overcrowded that people stand all of the time. She has made the request for at least two more carriages to be added. She also mentions people carrying bicycles on the train, and this is becoming a problem. I use the Luas and have seen people bringing their bicycles into seated and standing...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Capital Projects and Operations: Iarnród Éireann (24 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: That is a problem. Councillor Joe Conway - I got another one of my councillors in, thank God - has highlighted the fact that the disabled toilet on the Waterford train has been out of service since 2 December. Of all the people to let down, and I know because my son-in-law is in a wheelchair, any time wheelchair users want to travel, it is particularly difficult to have access and find...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Capital Projects and Operations: Iarnród Éireann (24 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: My kind of guy.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Capital Projects and Operations: Iarnród Éireann (24 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: No, it was the train here and I have the photographs.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Capital Projects and Operations: Iarnród Éireann (24 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: I will finish up by saying that Mr. Meade did respond very quickly to the call for early morning trains from Ballina and he is to be complimented on that. I thank him.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Capital Projects and Operations: Iarnród Éireann (24 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: People do, and especially these scooters we are still waiting to regulate.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: I and, I am sure, all members of my group join others in expressing sympathy to the Connor family. It is a tragedy to lose somebody in a road traffic accident. Two and a half years ago, after the cyberattack on the HSE, I started to involve myself in matters cyber. Initially, I worked with Louth and Meath ETB. That spread out to the University of Galway, Munster Technological University...

Seanad: Defence Forces Tribunal of Inquiry: Motion (30 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: With respect to time, my colleague, Senator Clonan, wants to speak. Must I share time with him or will the Acting Chairperson allocate time to him?

Seanad: Defence Forces Tribunal of Inquiry: Motion (30 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: That is fair enough. I will share time with Senator Clonan. I welcome the Tánaiste to the House for this important debate. I also welcome the veterans who are here. They clearly had to go through quite a lot of personal strife to get us to where we are today. I welcome the appointment of Ms Justice Ann Power, who is a judge of international standing. I wish her well in the work she...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (31 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: Hear, hear.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (31 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: I hope Senator Ahearn will forgive me but Castlebar, the home of my mother, was noted today as the best town in Ireland for work-life balance. As a west of Ireland man, I am delighted to note there is such a place outside County Tipperary, although I am sorry to have to inform Senator Ahearn of that fact. The referendums that will take place on 8 March are causing me a great deal of concern....

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (31 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: I am aware of that.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (31 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: I am seeking a debate on the McKenna judgment being respected by both Houses and any other agency funded by the State.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (31 Jan 2024)

Gerard Craughwell: We have an obligation to tell the truth. As I stated, Article 41.1.1° places marriage on a different bar or level from a durable relationship. It is there in black and white for everybody to see. Article 42B offers no practical support for families with disabled people. What happened here during Commencement matters this morning is outrageous and indicative of the way this House is...
