Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on New National Children’s Hospital: National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (12 Jul 2023)

Martin Conway: Does the board still have confidence in the contractor?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on New National Children’s Hospital: National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (12 Jul 2023)

Martin Conway: Mr. Gunning was scathing in his opening statement.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on New National Children’s Hospital: National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (12 Jul 2023)

Martin Conway: Yes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on New National Children’s Hospital: National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (12 Jul 2023)

Martin Conway: I accept that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on New National Children’s Hospital: National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (12 Jul 2023)

Martin Conway: I accept that. What I am trying to do is to get to the bottom of what the project is going to cost. Anyway, the witnesses are not going to say whether they have or do not have confidence in the contractor, so we will leave it at that.

Committee on Scrutiny of Draft EU-related Statutory Instruments: Committee Work Programme (4 Jul 2023)

Martin Conway: The committee is in its very early stages. It is a new committee. There has not been a committee of this type in the Oireachtas before. There will be housekeeping issues to be dealt with so the committee can advance and do its work as professionally, competently and effectively as we can. I thank the Minister of State for his patience. Unfortunately, because of the long discussion we...

Committee on Scrutiny of Draft EU-related Statutory Instruments: Committee Work Programme (4 Jul 2023)

Martin Conway: It seems there were crossed wires in terms of speeches, unfortunately. I think it has been clarified.

Committee on Scrutiny of Draft EU-related Statutory Instruments: Committee Work Programme (4 Jul 2023)

Martin Conway: I thank the Senator. It would be remiss of me not to celebrate the vast experience he has gained and the contribution he has made at the Council of Europe. This committee is very fortunate that he is a member, bringing with him that experience from his many years at the council. If I am not mistaken, he was a vice-president in the previous term. That experience will enrich and enhance the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Sep 2023)

Martin Conway: I would like to be associated with the tributes to Flor O'Mahony. I did not know him but his reputation was one of dedicated public service. I would also like to pass on my sympathies to the family of Damien O'Reilly. I attended his family last Thursday, as many in the House did. I knew Damien, initially through Senator Davitt's office and through working with Senator Davitt. I...

Seanad: Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) Bill 2022: Second Stage (26 Sep 2023)

Martin Conway: I join the Acting Chairperson in welcoming the students from the UCD Politics and International Relations Society, of which I am an alumnus. It was a great society then and I am sure it is a great society now. The Minister is extremely welcome to the House for the debate on this long overdue and vitally important legislation. We have a situation in this country whereby people can record...

Seanad: Road Safety: Statements (27 Sep 2023)

Martin Conway: I am conscious the Acting Chair is giving me time, so I am not going to delay. There are three issues that need to be addressed. First, we need a campaign to remind drivers of driver behaviour. Unfortunately, many accidents are caused by drivers breaking the rules of the road, not taking their time and not observing simple and decent driver behaviour. Second, we need to engage with the...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Wastewater Treatment (28 Sep 2023)

Martin Conway: The Minister of State is welcome to the House. This is an issue that affects many rural communities, but especially those in my county of Clare. There has been underinvestment in wastewater facilities there for decades under all Governments. There are many pockets of County Clare where development is precluded simply because there is not proper wastewater infrastructure. We are in a...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Wastewater Treatment (28 Sep 2023)

Martin Conway: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Heydon, very much. I know he is only delivering the message on behalf of the Minister, Deputy Darragh O'Brien. Reading between the lines, it is quite worrying because the expert panel that was appointed, which has evaluated all of the projects, could turn around and recommend that none of the projects should receive funding. What will happen then? Is...

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by An Taoiseach (28 Sep 2023)

Martin Conway: I welcome the Taoiseach to the House. In my capacity as health spokesperson for Fine Gael, one issue that predominates discussions on a regular basis is family carers. People who give up their careers to look after loved ones find themselves in a situation in which they do not get paid for it is not acceptable in a modern society. We need not just to radically overhaul the whole means test...

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by An Taoiseach (28 Sep 2023)

Martin Conway: Well said.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)

Martin Conway: I welcome the witnesses to what is an extremely important meeting. On the communication with the 19 people who were affected, why did CHI believe it was appropriate not to contact them until it had all its ducks in a row? Should it not have contacted them before that to alert them and perhaps follow up with the care plan or whatever else it was trying to put in place?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)

Martin Conway: Since this broke in the media, are there a number of the 17 who were only contacted yesterday or since the story went public?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)

Martin Conway: That is fine. The spring at issue was a non-medical grade device. I think that is the correct terminology. Was it from an approved supplier to the witnesses’ group?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)

Martin Conway: How in the name of God did it get into the system?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)

Martin Conway: I put this to the clinical director or the medical director, who has expressed surprise, and stated that this was unusual and so on. How can it be said that other similar devices are not being used within CHI? How can it be said with certainty, given this has happened?
