Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (15 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: It is inaccurate. It has been thrown around.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (15 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I did not get a chance to come in on the Order of Business yesterday. We were all shocked by the comments and the statement by Deputy Naughten that he will not be going forward as a Deputy in the constituency at the next election. I know he will be with us for the next period of time and we wish him well. I wish to acknowledge the help he was to me when I came in here in 2016 and the work...

Seanad: Domestic Violence (Amendment) Bill 2023: Second Stage (15 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I am delighted to see the McVittys in the Chamber. I know them from a different job in which I was involved. We became good friends over the years. It is lovely to see them and I will have a word with them in a moment. Like our Leader, Senator Gallagher, I am delighted to be here to support Senator Martin's Domestic Violence (Amendment) Bill 2023. I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I want to raise an issue I have spoken about before. It is the national primary route, the N5, and the Dublin to Westport route and particularly the bypass between Ballaghaderreen and Scramoge, which has been a danger to the public for many years. Industry also has been complaining that when transporting goods from the west to the east to the ports, a lot of material in trucks gets damaged....

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2021: Office of the Ombudsman (16 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: My apologies for not being able to attend in person. I am dealing with something else in my office. I thank Mr. Deering for his presentation. Because I was dealing with something else here I did not pick up on every point that was made in the presentation. Is it correct that the largest number of complaints were against local authorities?

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2021: Office of the Ombudsman (16 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Are those complaints mostly to do with housing? Mr. Deering may have clarified this previously

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2021: Office of the Ombudsman (16 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I missed the figure given for complaints against the HSE. What was that figure?

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2021: Office of the Ombudsman (16 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Was Mr. Deering surprised by that figure or did he think it would be higher?

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2021: Office of the Ombudsman (16 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: On the breakdown of those complaints to the HSE, did they all relate to the system or were they more to do with delays or waiting lists? Was there any area that Mr. Deering noticed when they got complaints that were more difficult than others? Were a lot of them do with waiting lists?

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2021: Office of the Ombudsman (16 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: That is something that could be resolved where it is an issue of communications. This could probably reduce a lot of those complaints. Did Mr. Deering give a figure regarding legal practices? Do they get many complaints about legal practices?

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2021: Office of the Ombudsman (16 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Is it the case, therefore, that the Office of the Ombudsman does not get many?

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2021: Office of the Ombudsman (16 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I am not surprised about the Department of Foreign Affairs because of the issues we had with passports. That is fair enough. How many relate to the marine? Did Mr. Deering say there were 77?

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2021: Office of the Ombudsman (16 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: That is still pretty low.

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2021: Office of the Ombudsman (16 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Yes. We are pleased with some of the public bodies. In fact, it was unfortunate that complaints about local authorities increased so much because given the pandemic and all that was happening, public bodies and Departments did manage to reduce the number of complaints that came to us, which is a good thing. That is what we want to happen. We want to see these bodies first providing a...

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2021: Office of the Ombudsman (16 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I am happy with Mr. Deering's response about disability transport and the concern he has shown in that regard. It is good to hear that the Minister of State, Deputy Rabbitte, and others are working to try to get solutions to that because it is a burning issue for quite a number of people. I thank Mr. Deering for sticking with me through all those questions. Is he happy with his own...

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2021: Office of the Ombudsman (16 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I thank Mr. Deering for his time. Finally, I presume a percentage of the complaints are spurious and the Office of the Ombudsman would probably not give much heed to them.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I also support the Order of Business as outlined by the Leader. I welcome the package announced by the Government yesterday. It is in excess of €1 billion and comes to approximately €1.3 billion. It is fairly well targeted. In these situations, it is not possible to look after everybody in the way we might like. I think from talking with the public that people are quite...

Seanad: Historic and Archaeological Heritage Bill 2023: Second Stage (22 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I am very glad we are having this debate. I want to welcome the Minister of State. I can say from the bottom of my heart that he has a huge interest in our heritage, history and archaeological finds. We have a very proud record in County Roscommon of a lot of heritage and a lot of buildings. I am sure the Minister of State is well aware of Rathcroghan which is one of the best sites in...

Seanad: Report on Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Ireland's Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Motion (22 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I probably will not need the whole eight minutes, but I do want to contribute to this debate. The Minister is welcome to the House and I thank her for being here. I acknowledge my party colleague, Deputy Niamh Smyth, and Senator Carrigy. It is obviously a very well put together report. It involved State agencies, union groups, academics and others, including the sector, on issues...

Seanad: Welfare and Safety of Workers in the Public Health Service: Motion (22 Feb 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I thank everybody for their contributions. I will call the Minister in a moment, before we return to Senator Hoey, as the Labour Party proposed this motion. Among others, I have been talking about all front-line workers in recent weeks, including gardaí, nursing staff and teachers. For a number of years, we have let things drag on. I do not think there is one person, on whichever...
