Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I thank Ms Nic Aongusa for clarifying this.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: National Action Plan on the Development of the Islands: Department of Rural and Community Development (13 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I thank the officials for attending and for their constructive and very positive engagement with the committee. The committee will shortly discuss its next considerations on this matter. It is our intention to present a report on our deliberations to the Minister before the action plan is published. We hope the committee's deliberations and recommendations are very much taken on board by...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: National Action Plan on the Development of the Islands: Department of Rural and Community Development (13 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: Gabhaim buíochas le Bairbre Nic Aonghusa as a cur i láthair. Cuirfidh mé ceist amháin shimplí i dtosach báire faoi línte ama. Cathain a bheidh an plean seo réidh?

Rental Sector: Motion [Private Members] (19 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: In accordance with Standing Order 80(2), the division is postponed until the weekly division time tomorrow evening, Wednesday, 20 October 2021.

Pre-European Council Meeting: Statements (20 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I dtosach báire, mar gurb é seo an chéad deis atá agam, ba mhaith liom nóiméad a thógáil chun cuimhneamh ar bheirt dár mórfhilí a chailleamar le cúpla lá anuas – Brendan Kennelly agus Máire Mhac an tSaoi. Mar a tharlaíonn go minic, is iad focail na bhfilí féin is fearr chun ómós a...

Pre-European Council Meeting: Statements (20 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: Very good. I do not doubt the Minister of State. I note that Deputy Boyd Barrett has a copy of the same letter that I am about to reference. The Taoiseach would also have received a copy of the letter from the People's Vaccine Alliance Ireland concerning the TRIPS waiver. Would that we were able to say that Covid is in the rear-view mirror in this country but unfortunately, it has...

Citizens' Assembly on Gender Equality: Statements (20 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: In her inaugural address in December 1990, Mary Robinson declared: "As a woman, I want women who have felt themselves outside history to be written back into history, in the words of Eavan Boland, 'finding a voice where they found a vision'". President Robinson was acknowledging that her landmark election owed a great deal to stalwarts of feminism like Eavan Boland and Máire Mhac an...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Horticulture Sector (21 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: 11. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if a report (details supplied) will examine the way Ireland can position itself to take advantage of the growing international trend to plant-based diets; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [51527/21]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Horticulture Sector (21 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: My question is about the KPMG report recently commissioned by the Department, which is to examine the trend towards plant-based diets or increasing the amount of plants in our diets. Will the parameters of that report allow us to examine ways in which Ireland can position itself to take better advantage of that growing market internationally?

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Horticulture Sector (21 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: One of the things that have driven me mad for years, particularly at this time of the year, is to walk past apple trees laden down with apples only to find New Zealand apples on the shelves of our supermarkets. Mick Kelly had a similar journey with regard to garlic when he set up GIY Ireland Limited. He was looking at Chinese garlic on the shelves when it is so easy to grow it in this...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Horticulture Sector (21 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: It is a massive opportunity for local and rural jobs, in particular. The horticultural sector is worth approximately €467 million per annum to the economy, and approximately 6,600 people are directly employed in it. There are many different sectors within it, but in field vegetables we have gone from 300 operators in 1999 to 140 operators now. The number has more than halved in that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (19 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I agree with the Deputy. I found the presentations and briefing notes very interesting because we are starting to move to the crux of the matter, which is how we try to balance tensions between having an external, fair exam and how we can match it up with a continuous assessment model. We all agree the leaving certificate rewards a specific, narrow set of skills. We want to move beyond...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (19 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I have two further questions relating to more granular concerns. Mr. Whyte made particular reference to literacy and numeracy. It has often struck me, particularly around languages, that if somebody is not necessarily a very capable language learner, he or she will probably struggle with three or four of the seven subjects being taken for the leaving certificate examination. Obviously,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (19 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: With the Chairman's indulgence, I have one more question. It is one that probably will receive a one-word answer and I suspect that I know what the word will be. We have been talking a great deal about well-being in schools and directing students to different pathways than those on which we are currently focused, such as the pathway to third level. Do we need to invest more in guidance...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (19 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I suspected there would be a one-word answer.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (19 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I agree.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (19 Oct 2021)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I think we all were damaged by the leaving certificate. Obviously, it is more pronounced in certain groups but everyone here can relate to having nightmares, as adults, about the examination, including those who were successful in it. We were all damaged by it and it certainly needs reform.

[50871/21]
