John Dolan: It is behind.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

John Dolan: I am just making the point that it is indicative of the amount of effort and resources going into it. It was not a budgetary or financial issue but a question of no one saying there was a commitment to have it done by the end of 2018. If someone did say it, everybody else ignored it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

John Dolan: It is where it is, but it is being done.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

John Dolan: The others should come up to that standard.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

John Dolan: It struck me when listening to the Minister that the report will help the committee and the Department in their work to disability proof inclusion meaures in the context of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It enables both to state what is happening in dealing with the transport article in the convention. It is a great device to have. There is an Oireachtas...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

John Dolan: Has the NTA developed a set of key performance indicators for the 16 recommendations in the report? Otherwise, we will be coming back episodically asking about this matter and that matter. It would be a great reassurance if the NTA has done that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

John Dolan: That is fine.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

John Dolan: It also gives the Department an opportunity to talk to its colleagues and to ensure that if the Department is carrying out a certain measure, its colleagues need to be carrying out the same measure in sync and vice versa.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

John Dolan: I want to make a couple of brief points to follow up on that. I gave the example of Go-Ahead, how it has been bought and paid for and how it had to be retrofitted and have the colours changed. I am going from memory on this but one of the issues that was pointed out in that was the turning and manoeuvrability space in the buses. Some people were saying it was not quite as good as in buses...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

John Dolan: I did not say so at the start but I am delighted to hear about the national transport training centre and the work taking place there with the National Council for the Blind Ireland. That is a really positive development that is happening with the NTA.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Disability Inclusion and International Development Issues: Discussion (2 Jul 2019)

John Dolan: I am delighted to be here with people I met recently at the Conference of States Parties, COSP. On this occasion we do not have to travel so far to be with them. On a more serious note, I pay tribute to everybody present from Dóchas and my own organisation, the Disability Federation of Ireland, which has been a part of this issue during the years. I hope it will continue to be. That...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Disability Inclusion and International Development Issues: Discussion (2 Jul 2019)

John Dolan: We are a small, chatty, non-colonist country and we have a good track record. In response to Deputy Barrett's point, a number of Irish disability organisations have been active and have partnered themselves, which is something that could be examined.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Health Service Executive: Chairman (3 Jul 2019)

John Dolan: I will honour the Chairman's request to ask only one question. As a prelude to that, I want to pick up on some of the things Mr. Devane said. First, however, I wish him the very best. Deputy Kelly said he was sorry for Mr. Devane's troubles but they are troubles that belong to all of us if what the HSE is doing does not work, particularly those of us who need health services. That is the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Health Service Executive: Chairman (3 Jul 2019)

John Dolan: Indeed. I invite Mr. Devane to discuss those issues.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing for People with a Disability: Discussion (4 Jul 2019)

John Dolan: I will conclude on the grant waiting lists. Marvellous things have happened in the past ten or 20 years in terms of kids being able to attend regular schools and being educated with their brothers and sisters, but most adaptation grant applications are from families that are trying to kick off family formation, pay high mortgages and rents, etc. They are living in houses that are not...

John Dolan: She is a grand lady.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing for People with a Disability: Discussion (4 Jul 2019)

John Dolan: The Vice Chairman mentioned engagement of people with disabilities at different fora, including committees. He also mentioned Councillor Miriam Murphy, who came back with an enhanced vote, which is good news. That is important. When the transport report was written, it was published with evidence and quotes from people with disabilities. They were lived experiences. Would it be possible...

Seanad Public Consultation Committee: Travellers Towards a More Equitable Ireland Post-Recognition: Discussion (9 Jul 2019)

John Dolan: I am very happy to be present and to contribute on this issue. I thank Senator Kelleher for all the work she has done on this issue since the day she entered this House. In particular, I welcome someone who spent an afternoon in this Chamber in June 2003. That is Ms Rosaleen McDonagh, if she remembers, when both of us made presentations to the 11th review of the Seanad. Perhaps it was the...
