Other Questions: Architectural Heritage (8 Dec 2015)

Gabrielle McFadden: I thank the Minister. Certainly, the report is most welcome. There are a number of wonderful historic houses in my constituency — I am obviously being parochial — that have been recognised as tourism landmarks, including Belvedere House and Ballinlough Castle. If one visits one of these wonderful buildings, one certainly gets a strong sense of place. It helps us to...

Other Questions: Architectural Heritage (8 Dec 2015)

Gabrielle McFadden: I understand I am under time pressure so I will not go into a lot of detail. I am glad to learn the recommendations will not just emphasise the marketing of the houses, but also the protection of the infrastructure. In the context of protecting infrastructure, I welcomed the proposal to establish the building conservation advisory service for the owners, which will provide important advice...

To ask the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform his views on the Alliance of Retired Public Servants concerns that, while legislation provides for gradual restoration of pensions from 2016 to 2018 to 65,000 public service pensioners, there is no end in sight for the remaining 25,000 pensioners who continue to have their pensions reduced under emergency powers; and if he will make a...

Topical Issue Debate: Flood Relief and Prevention Measures (16 Dec 2015)

Gabrielle McFadden: As we know, this continues to be a very difficult and anxious time for the people affected by or even at risk of flooding. People are living in fear and uncertainty. People, some of them elderly, are worried sick about feeling trapped in their homes. This is a very stressful time, particularly for older people. I have seen it myself helping people to leave their homes. Nobody should have...

Topical Issue Debate: Flood Relief and Prevention Measures (16 Dec 2015)

Gabrielle McFadden: I thank the Minister of State for coming to the House to take this matter. This situation is not sustainable for communities and businesses. They cannot continue to endure it. I know the Government is committed to doing all it can. It is not just a matter of planning but of investing the resources needed to implement these flood defence plans that are so talked about. I am very pleased...

Topical Issue Debate: Flood Relief and Prevention Measures (16 Dec 2015)

Gabrielle McFadden: I have no question about the willingness of members of the Defence Forces to come out the minute they were asked. My problem was that the Westmeath County Council did not ask them out in time. Something should be done afterwards to make the plan a national one. I know that members of the Army in Athlone were willing and able to come out.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Welfare of Ex-Service Personnel: Discussion (16 Dec 2015)

As a Deputy from a garrison town, I am very proud of the Defence Forces and all their members, both serving and retired, as is nearly everybody in my town. We have a very proud history with the Defence Forces. When I was elected in the by-election last...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Welfare of Ex-Service Personnel: Discussion (16 Dec 2015)

Gabrielle McFadden: Everything I wanted to say has been said. Education is included in the White Paper and I raised it with the Minister myself after the symposium. It is a policy in the White Paper, even if it is not necessarily a priority. The Minister is very clued into the difficulties of what happens just before a soldier comes out and how difficult it is to get an education or a job.

Leaders' Questions (13 Jan 2016)

Gabrielle McFadden: Why did Fianna Fáil not do it in 2009 when in government?

Flooding: Statements (13 Jan 2016)

Gabrielle McFadden: We have been through a terrible time with flooding in Athlone and Clondra. Working on the ground since the floods began in early December, I have seen at first hand the level of devastation and distress that has been suffered by people and businesses. With this in mind, I invited several Ministers, including the Minister of State, Deputy Harris, and, of course, the Taoiseach to come and see...

Flooding: Statements (13 Jan 2016)

Gabrielle McFadden: Some of the permanent flood defences will take time and I urge local authorities to apply to the OPW for the up to €500,000 funding programme put in place. I know I am under pressure but I need to say this too-----
