Seanad: Accident and Emergency Services: Statements. (9 May 2006)

Camillus Glynn: Any statistic that muddles the figures for accident and emergency attendance is unhelpful. We have excellent general practitioners and people should present to them in the first instance. We all know the use being made of the accident and emergency units. Having been a health professional in the midland region and having dealt with Mullingar Regional Hospital, Tullamore Hospital and...

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 May 2006)

Camillus Glynn: I support the remarks by Senator Brian Hayes and others. I have great regard for the Garda Síochána and it is a tremendous body. The utterances made, which smack of politics, are unfortunate and ill-advised. It behoves all of us in this House and the Dáil that regardless of whether we agree with legislation, it becomes law when on the Statute Book. We are duty bound to support it....

Seanad: Order of Business. (17 May 2006)

Camillus Glynn: Recent newspaper reports stated that people walking on the boardwalk along the River Liffey adjacent to Liberty Hall were heckled and verbally abused by people who were high on drugs and openly injecting themselves and by others selling drugs. This is unacceptable and I call on the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform and the Garda Síochána to address this as a matter of urgency.

Seanad: Order of Business. (17 May 2006)

Camillus Glynn: Tá sé múchta. Last week I asked the Leader about the position of the Medical Practitioners Bill and when it would be brought before the House and I seek an update on that.

Seanad: Order of Business. (24 May 2006)

Camillus Glynn: The Supreme Court ruling must send a shiver down the spine of every parent the length and breadth of this country. I strongly support what Senator Brian Hayes said, as must all right-thinking people. This House has taken the lead in the past in tackling urgent matters and no Member would object to sitting at any time, even on a Sunday and with the shortest possible notice, to address the...

Seanad: Public Hospital Land: Motion. (31 May 2006)

Camillus Glynn: I move amendment No. 1: To delete all words after "That" and substitute the following: Seanad Éireann —commends the Government on the measures it is promoting to improve access for public patients to acute hospital care; —supports the Tánaiste's policy to develop private hospitals on the campuses of public hospitals in order that up to 1,000 beds currently reserved for private patients...

Seanad: Public Hospital Land: Motion. (31 May 2006)

Camillus Glynn: It is all about delivering services to more people. This initiative will increase the delivery of services and reduce the cost to the Exchequer. I appreciate that there will be concerns and some people may be afraid of what is new, but this has the capacity to work. It will increase the number of public beds and the savings made can be used elsewhere in the health service.

Seanad: Order of Business. (7 Jun 2006)

Camillus Glynn: I call for a debate on rheumatology services. The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children, of which I am a member, recently received a deputation which outlined the shortcomings in the area of rheumatology. It is clear that the appropriately trained personnel and resources are available and the waiting time for treatment for those suffering from rheumatism and related conditions is...

Seanad: Order of Business. (7 Jun 2006)

Camillus Glynn: Yes. Such a debate is needed urgently. As I stated in this House previously, it is clear that there are organised criminal gangs coming into this country for the purposes I outlined. I want to know what sort of monitoring is done on the people coming in here. If they are coming to do what some of them are obviously doing, then it is best that they stay away.

Seanad: Health (Repayment Scheme) Bill 2006: Second Stage. (7 Jun 2006)

Camillus Glynn: Fáiltim an Aire Stáit go dtí an Teach. I welcome this Bill which is putting right something that should not have happened in the first place. While it may have taken some time, in this case we should not sacrifice accuracy for speed. It is important that we get it right. I welcome the ex gratia payments made, which are a gesture of goodwill on the part of the Government to address the...

Seanad: Order of Business. (8 Jun 2006)

Camillus Glynn: They were right.

Seanad: Order of Business. (8 Jun 2006)

Camillus Glynn: Despite the best efforts of local authorities, environmental groups, tidy towns committees and others, we still have a serious problem with fly-dumping. It is very annoying to drive along national roads and see black bags full of litter or even old armchairs or mattresses dumped on the side of the road. We have had several debates on the matter in the House but it merits another given the...

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Jun 2006)

Camillus Glynn: I support what was stated about the drugs situation, the death of Veronica Guerin and the brave acts of that girl who, as a journalist took on the godfathers of drug distribution and the drugs trade. Many of the young people who go to discos and nightclubs know the names of those peddling drugs. However, they will not tell because there is a cloak of secrecy over the distribution of drugs....

Seanad: Health (Repayment Scheme) Bill 2006: Committee Stage. (13 Jun 2006)

Camillus Glynn: I support the words of the Minister of State and indeed, those of Senator Quinn. Those who will deal with these matters are people who have been involved in the tendering process. As a consequence, it is reasonable to assume that the optimum value will be secured for and on behalf of the State. There is no point in going into histrionics as to why this money has to be paid back. Everybody...

Seanad: Health (Repayment Scheme) Bill 2006: Committee Stage. (13 Jun 2006)

Camillus Glynn: It must be appreciated that the time of HSE personnel also costs money. The HSE has stated clearly that it is not in a position to deliver on this service and that must be respected. I do not believe that utterances are made without due consideration. I agree with the Minister of State and Senator Quinn and I respect the views of Senators Ryan, Browne and Leyden. The time of a public official...

Seanad: Order of Business. (14 Jun 2006)

Camillus Glynn: I support Senator O'Toole's comments relating to the bogs of Westmeath and Longford. It took millions of years to create them and mere hours to destroy them. This is not the first time this has happened. In my own locality people lost their entire crop of turf to bog fires and immeasurable harm has been done to wildlife so people should be very careful. This seems to have happened often in...

Seanad: Order of Business. (14 Jun 2006)

Camillus Glynn: Yes. I agree that the Leader should request the Taoiseach and Government to mark in some way the role the Christian Brothers have played in the education of the people of Ireland at a time when there was no hope of ordinary boys, especially those from deprived areas, receiving an education.

Seanad: Health (Repayment Scheme) Bill 2006: Report and Final Stages (14 Jun 2006)

Camillus Glynn: I thank the Cathaoirleach and the Minister of State, Deputy Seán Power. I thank also my colleagues, Senators Browne and Henry, for their contributions and the responsible manner in which they applied themselves to the passing of the Bill. It is important that a situation that has obtained for some 30 years and beyond would be corrected and this Bill seeks to do just that. My views are on...

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Jun 2006)

Camillus Glynn: I support a call for a debate on the recent health report. I agree with Senator Quinn that it is useful to have this report at this time. There are some aspects with which we all agree and some we will disagree with. I do not want to pre-empt what might be said in the course of that debate. However, one of the topics that annoys me on an ongoing basis is capital projects. Capital projects, by...

Seanad: A Strategy for Cancer Control in Ireland: Statements. (28 Jun 2006)

Camillus Glynn: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Tim O'Malley, to the House. I compliment him and the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children, Deputy Harney, on the strides that have been made in the area of cancer control. Certainly, I am not for one moment saying that we are enjoying a utopia but many significant steps forward have been taken in addressing this serious matter. I thank Deputy...
