Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2021: University of Limerick (18 May 2023)

Verona Murphy: That was not my question. The question I asked was whether this exposed UL to further legal litigation.

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2021: University of Limerick (18 May 2023)

Verona Murphy: Was that not done in 2015? Professor Kilcommins just said that there was a further report in 2015.

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2021: University of Limerick (18 May 2023)

Verona Murphy: It seems things keep recurring in UL. That is the real issue with UL's credibility and we are being told that there is a new policy in place. You can have all the policies you like but they need to be followed through and implemented. What Professor Kilcommins just said to me was that the content of the first report was followed on by another report in 2015, which he said basically...

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2021: University of Limerick (18 May 2023)

Verona Murphy: Is it not laughable?

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2021: University of Limerick (18 May 2023)

Verona Murphy: Yes.

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2021: University of Limerick (18 May 2023)

Verona Murphy: I appreciate that. Is it not laughable that the Department took that action as a way of saying, "Step up here or you are not getting money" while on the other hand, the URDF hands out €750,000. How much funding did the Department withhold?

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2021: University of Limerick (18 May 2023)

Verona Murphy: I am sure we can say the €750,000 was used for the development of the property. It has not bolstered any of the funds that have not been sanctioned or what the Department's money would have gone towards. It is laughable that we are subsidising something of this behaviour from other Departments. I think it is incumbent on the Chair and the committee to make that statement and to make...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (24 May 2023)

Verona Murphy: Retained firefights are due to take industrial action next month. The Government has been accused of failing to address a worsening recruitment and retention crises in the service. The action will commence on 6 June and will see members engaging in a campaign of non-co-operation with work outside of responding to emergency calls. Retained firefights who make up the vast majority of...

Government Commitments on Offshore Renewable Energy: Motion (Resumed) (24 May 2023)

Verona Murphy: I reiterate Deputy Howlin's calls in the House today to invest in Rosslare Europort. This is the eighth time I have spoken on this topic in the Dáil since my election in 2020. On the first of those occasions, during Topical Issues, I highlighted that Rosslare Europort was the most suitable of all our ports for a wind energy base to be established. I asked the Minister of State, Deputy...

Court Proceedings (Delays) Bill 2023: Second Stage (24 May 2023)

Verona Murphy: That is all right, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle. The former Minister for Justice, Senator McDowell, spoke at length in the Seanad debate on this Bill. He said we need dangerous people off our streets as soon as possible. He also spoke about the extension of the retirement age for judges to 72 rather than 70, which it currently is. Allowing judges the option of working for an extra couple of...

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation Accounts 2021
Vote 24 – Justice
(25 May 2023)

Verona Murphy: My apologies were given at the start of the meeting. They were meant to be that I was going to be late rather than not appear. On paragraph 6.4, page 43, I note there is a huge disparity between the legal costs that are paid out by the Department and shows almost €11.7 million was paid but the compensation was just over €490,000. Please explain the disproportionate fees...

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation Accounts 2021
Vote 24 – Justice
(25 May 2023)

Verona Murphy: Does the Secretary General not think the legal costs are quite extravagant at €11.7 million? Does that amount mean her Department is paying literally for both sides of the judicial review? Of course the applicant receives legal aid.

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation Accounts 2021
Vote 24 – Justice
(25 May 2023)

Verona Murphy: I would say the compensation is lower certainly. What is the success rate in judicial reviews for things like asylum seekers or international protection appeals?
