Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (15 Nov 2016)

Seán Sherlock: The committee has received 15 petitions to date since its establishment. The secretariat has been examining them to establish their admissibility and how best to progress them for consideration by the committee. There are five petitions to be discussed and we will now deliver our decisions on these. The first petition is Petition No. P00013/16 from Mr. Paul Lorigan entitled Extend Offer...

Topical Issue Debate: Hospital Waiting Lists (16 Nov 2016)

Seán Sherlock: I wish to raise the lack of access to women's gynaecology services in Cork University Maternity Hospital, CUMH. Women in the Cork region have drastically longer waiting times for these services than women elsewhere in the country. It is causing devastating consequences for the women and their families in the region served by the Cork University Hospital and CUMH. I will outline some...

Topical Issue Debate: Hospital Waiting Lists (16 Nov 2016)

Seán Sherlock: I thank the Minister of State for her reply. She spoke of some progress in the appointment of a sonographer and a clear schedule to clear the ultrasound waiting list by 2016. In that sense, I accept the Minister of State's reply. In raising the issue, I am trying to examine the governance issue regarding the relationship between CUMH and Cork University Hospital, CUH. Although the HSE...

Post Office Network: Motion [Private Members] (16 Nov 2016)

Seán Sherlock: We support this motion. There are aspects of it worthy of further interrogation, particularly the publication by Grant Thornton of its report predicting that 450 to 500 post offices will cease to exist by 2017. I question that figure because the evidence during the past five years would not bear it out. It would take a major diminution in services for that figure to be borne out in real...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Roads Infrastructure Programme: Discussion. (16 Nov 2016)

Seán Sherlock: I note with interest Mr. Nolan's submission, especially where he refers to the capital investment programme, saying, "Should additional funding be allocated following the mid-term review of the plan, TII will look at the potential to accelerate certain projects, the construction of additional projects and the planning of others, including the upgrade of the strategic connection between Cork...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Roads Infrastructure Programme: Discussion. (16 Nov 2016)

Seán Sherlock: Is it appropriate for me to seek clarification?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Roads Infrastructure Programme: Discussion. (16 Nov 2016)

Seán Sherlock: Effectively, Mr. Nolan is saying that this progressed significantly in that resources have been made available to get the M20, Cork to Limerick, back on the planning agenda.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Roads Infrastructure Programme: Discussion. (16 Nov 2016)

Seán Sherlock: Thank you, Chairman, for your indulgence on this matter. It is a vital piece of infrastructure. The witness mentioned the abolition of quotas and, perhaps, going back to a blank page again because the previous routes that had been selected might have to be revised. That is not to put words into his mouth. As I said previously, there is a situation with the Mallow relief road. It is a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Roads Infrastructure Programme: Discussion. (16 Nov 2016)

Seán Sherlock: I am glad the Deputy is coming around to my way of thinking.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Roads Infrastructure Programme: Discussion. (16 Nov 2016)

Seán Sherlock: I also asked about the N72 and N73. I would like a reply about the road safety issue. Ideally Mr. Nolan should drive the stretch of road between Mitchelstown and Mallow. We all acknowledge the works on sections of the road between Mallow and Fermoy and Mallow and Mitchelstown but there are still sections which are very unsafe.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Roads Infrastructure Programme: Discussion. (16 Nov 2016)

Seán Sherlock: That is the ideal time to drive it to see how bad it is. I thank Mr. Nolan.

Written Answers — Department of Defence: Naval Service Vessels (22 Nov 2016)

Seán Sherlock: 581. To ask the Taoiseach and Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the Naval Service ship, LE Aisling is stood down; if so, if he has determined a future plan for the ship to be retained in the ownership of the State; if it is intended to move the vessel to another port or whether the ship will be sold, leased or gifted to a third party or State; and if his...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Banking Sector in Ireland: Permanent TSB (22 Nov 2016)

Seán Sherlock: There are some specific questions on the buy-to-let, BTL, field, including No. 6, which is about the short-term solutions being provided, and No. 7 which is about the long-term solutions being provided. First, however, I want to deal with question No. 2, which asked the number of BTL mortgages reported as in arrears greater than 90 days as of 30 June. Since 2013, when the bank cited a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Banking Sector in Ireland: Permanent TSB (22 Nov 2016)

Seán Sherlock: When considering the BTL long-term solutions, Mr. O'Sullivan referred specifically to the reduced payment greater than the interest rate. In fairness to the bank, it has provided all the numbers comprehensively for us, which is to be welcomed. The figure of 1,351 is quoted. If there are 1,351 mortgage holders paying a reduced payment that is greater than the interest rate, wherein lies the...
