- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 May 2023)
Martin Conway: I would like to remember and pay tribute to Seán Keane of The Chieftains who passed away unexpectedly over the weekend. Seán was a dedicated and very talented musician. He was ground-breaking in what he did. His wife, who predeceased him by a couple of years, was from Ennistymon where I am from and Seán visited the town many times. As recently as six months ago, he took...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 May 2023)
Martin Conway: I stand today for one purpose, and that is to second Senator Wilson's proposal that this House play an active role in ensuring that Garda Jeremiah Coonan receives the Scott medal for bravery. I think it is an oversight. Anybody who saves a human life does something unique and precious, and something that really and truly is an act of humanity. In this case, Garda Coonan risked his life and...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (17 May 2023)
Martin Conway: I have organised briefing on hemochromatosis this afternoon in the audiovisual room. The former Deputy, Senator and Seanad Leader, Maurice Manning, who has hemochromatosis, will speak. This is important because many people have the condition. It would much be much appreciated if Senators could attend or arrange for a member of their staff to attend. I think it will be very informative I...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (17 May 2023)
Martin Conway: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Civil Defence Bill 2023: Second Stage (18 May 2023)
Martin Conway: I concur with Senator Wall's comments on the work of the Civil Defence. I remember at the time of the serious floods in County Clare in 2010 and the big freeze in 2009 the work done by the Civil Defence was extraordinary. As we have no other speakers offering, I call on the Minister of State to conclude.
- Seanad: Civil Defence Bill 2023: Second Stage (18 May 2023)
Martin Conway: Before I get to the formalities, and even though they have just left the Chamber, I welcome pupils from Kilcloon National School, who are here as guests of Minister of State, Deputy Thomas Byrne. I was not going to interrupt the Minister of State, Deputy Burke, to say that, but somebody will tell them that their name is on the record of the House.
- Seanad: Civil Defence Bill 2023: Second Stage (18 May 2023)
Martin Conway: When is it proposed to take Committee Stage?
- Seanad: Civil Defence Bill 2023: Second Stage (18 May 2023)
Martin Conway: Is that agreed? Agreed.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Access to Community Neurological Rehabilitation Teams: Discussion (17 May 2023)
Martin Conway: I thank Deputies Kenny and Hourigan for letting me go ahead of them. I must attend a very important meeting with the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth at 10.30 a.m. Our guests are very welcome and I thank them for their ongoing work. Ms Rogers said in her opening statement that budget 2023 provided funding for an additional 23 specialist nurses. How many...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Access to Community Neurological Rehabilitation Teams: Discussion (17 May 2023)
Martin Conway: The posts have not even been put out for recruitment yet, so would it be reasonable to expect that we will see the extra nurses in place by the end of the year or is that wishful thinking?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Access to Community Neurological Rehabilitation Teams: Discussion (17 May 2023)
Martin Conway: In terms of their dealings with the HSE, our guests spoke about their frustration with ongoing delays. While Covid-19 was clearly an issue, there are delays that should not have happened. Is there any person in the HSE that they engage with on a regular basis?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Access to Community Neurological Rehabilitation Teams: Discussion (17 May 2023)
Martin Conway: Ms Rogers does not have to name anyone but is there an individual with whom she liaises on a regular basis? A lot of organisations that appear before this committee tell us that there is not a lead person in the HSE with whom they deal, or that the lead person keeps changing and so on. I am just curious to know if there are protocols in place and if they are working. Is there meaningful...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Access to Community Neurological Rehabilitation Teams: Discussion (17 May 2023)
Martin Conway: Are there challenges in terms of where the actual responsibility for this lies, whether it is with primary care or disability? Where does Ms Rogers think responsibility should rest in terms of funding and all of that?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Access to Community Neurological Rehabilitation Teams: Discussion (17 May 2023)
Martin Conway: I get that, but does Ms Rogers think the fact that where the strategy belongs has not got this type of clarity causes frustrations in terms of progress?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Access to Community Neurological Rehabilitation Teams: Discussion (17 May 2023)
Martin Conway: We will certainly put that to him next week and I thank Ms Rogers for her time.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó (Atógáil) - Order of Business (Resumed) (24 May 2023)
Martin Conway: Colleagues are fully aware of the situation in Inch, County Clare. I welcome the lifting of the blockade. I have always believed the blockade was wrong and I was not afraid of calling it out and saying so. That said, I also have an issue with a bar, blockade or delay in information and communication from Departments. Every county in the country will have to step up to the plate and assist...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 May 2023)
Martin Conway: What you say makes complete logical sense, a Chathaoirligh. I support the amendment to the Order of Business proposed by my colleague, Senator Seery Kearney. I would also like to raise an issue that I have raised on many occasions, as have many other colleagues across the House, which is University Hospital Limerick, UHL. I welcome the announcement by the Minister yesterday that enabling...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2023: Discussion (24 May 2023)
Martin Conway: I was going to ask about MS and neurological disease but it has been well covered. It will come as no surprise to Mr. Gloster that I am going to ask about University Hospital Limerick, UHL. I know he visited UHL very recently. It is at the top in terms of the numbers of people on trolleys. We see that consistently in the trolley figures of the HSE and the Irish Nurses and Midwives...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2023: Discussion (24 May 2023)
Martin Conway: He has already instigated some changes in the senior management. Could he give us an update on the position in UHL? It is now nearly the test case nationally for how we deal with accident and emergency services. It is a constant issue. The numbers are too high. Even in recent days, the numbers have been too high. I would like to hear Mr. Gloster's thoughts.
