Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals on Health Technology Assessment (28 Mar 2018)

Bernard Durkan: Why is it necessary for us to associate with a number of countries, albeit small countries? Why do we not associate our assessment system with all countries, thereby getting the benefit of the Single Market, which I have often referred to in this context? The Single Market is supposed to be available throughout all disciplines, not just with regard to travel or something like that, but this...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals on Health Technology Assessment (28 Mar 2018)

Bernard Durkan: There are several other areas where we come in under one EU roof. Why is this particular area exclusive and why does it come up again and again? I cannot understand it and I will never understand it if I live to be 100 - I am heading that way at the moment. If we are to gain the benefits and efficiencies that one would expect to gain from being part of a bigger population, there are rules...

Vote 38 - Health (Revised)
(28 Mar 2018)

Bernard Durkan: I welcome the Minister of State and the statement and information he has given to the committee. There are two or three things that came to my attention. I am delighted to see the move towards programme budgeting. One of my fetishes has always been comparison with the health boards, which always had programme budgeting. Since that finished we do not seem to be able to go anywhere with...

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2018
Vote 38 - Health (Revised)
(28 Mar 2018)

Bernard Durkan: I am sorry to interrupt again. Yes, that is true. However, if we are beset by waiting lists, as we have been for many years now, there has to be some reason for it. Maybe it is a shortage of administrators. Maybe administrators are what we need. I do not know, but I do know that we have to overhaul our waiting lists. Otherwise we may as well close the shop altogether and go home. The...

Other Questions: School Accommodation Provision (29 Mar 2018)

Bernard Durkan: I thank the Minister for his reply. Can I further inquire as to whether particular or specific criteria are to be applied with a view, in the first instance, to taking out the prefabs which are in the worst condition? Is there a plan in place to do that? Will schools whose entire student populations are in prefabs get priority treatment?

Other Questions: School Accommodation Provision (29 Mar 2018)

Bernard Durkan: To refer to a school the Minister will know well, Newtown school in Enfield, the entire pupil body of that school is in prefab accommodation and has been for some years. Will it be possible to identify such schools with a view to treating them with particular urgency, because the degree to which prefabs can deteriorate over a very short time brings an urgency of its own?
