- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Making Europe Fit for the Digital Age: EU Commissioner for Competition (23 Jun 2021)
Johnny Mythen: I concede to Deputy Christopher O'Sullivan. He was not here at first and I would like for him to speak first.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Making Europe Fit for the Digital Age: EU Commissioner for Competition (23 Jun 2021)
Johnny Mythen: The Commissioner mentioned there was a proposal for an artificial intelligence, AI, Act. Why is a separate Act needed for AI? Would it not be covered under the digital Act? Does the Commissioner think there should be more built-in deterrents for these ransomware attacks, such as confiscation of bank accounts, assets and so forth, and that they should be increased?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Making Europe Fit for the Digital Age: EU Commissioner for Competition (23 Jun 2021)
Johnny Mythen: Why does Ms Vestager believe the AI legislation needs to be separate from the digital legislation?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Impact of Covid-19 on the Entertainment Sector: Music Entertainment Association of Ireland (23 Jun 2021)
Johnny Mythen: I have two quick questions. The MEAI representatives said they asked the Minister in August 2020 for a review of the professional artists on jobseeker's allowance scheme. What was the response to this request? They also mentioned the failure to recognise musicians, sound engineers, road crews and so forth as sole traders. Do they see this as a major obstacle to their industry?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Impact of Covid-19 on the Entertainment Sector: Music Entertainment Association of Ireland (23 Jun 2021)
Johnny Mythen: I asked about designation as a sole trader.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Making Europe Fit for the Digital Age: EU Commissioner for Competition (23 Jun 2021)
Johnny Mythen: I thank the Commissioner for appearing before the committee. I have four questions. How important is rural proofing to all of these ideas to make sure we do not leave anybody behind? Young people use the most data and they are prominent users of social media. How are the voices and perspectives of young people included in the regulatory work of the European Commission? The Commissioner...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Challenges Facing Arts Venues and Theatres as a result of Covid-19: Discussion (30 Jun 2021)
Johnny Mythen: I thank the witnesses. I have a couple of quick questions on amateur drama to follow on from what Mr. Kenny said. He said performing groups had eight to 12 weeks to rehearse and prepare. Are there measures we can take? Can we help in any way to get back to rehearsing? Have the groups looked at other countries beyond Ireland to see how they are operating? Some are ahead of the posse. ...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Impact of Covid-19 on the Restaurant Industry: Discussion (30 Jun 2021)
Johnny Mythen: I thank Mr. Treyvaud. I heard his contribution on Newstalk yesterday. It is heart-rending. The recent announcements have sent shock waves through restaurant industry and, indeed, publican industry. It is devastating for everyone who was looking forward to the reopening, not only those in the business but the customers of restaurants and local pubs. Everyone was looking forward to it and...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: General Scheme of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2020: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Jul 2021)
Johnny Mythen: I thank Mr. Lupton, Ms Fitzpatrick and Dr. Docquir. My first questions are for Ms Fitzpatrick. Would it be beneficial to include in the Bill a clause setting out a specific date for the immediate appointment of a regulator? She stated that the inclusion of social management liability is undermining the credibility of the Bill. Who then should be liable within the Bill? Dr. Docquir...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: General Scheme of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2020: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Jul 2021)
Johnny Mythen: My first question is for Mr. Lupton. The introduction of the online safety codes is important but Mr. Lupton states that there are no guarantees, since they are voluntary codes, that the company will sign up or that it will stick to the terms. Is this a weakness in the Bill? Does the Bill need to be strengthened? I have another little question. It is a bugbear of mine. One of the...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: General Scheme of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2021)
Johnny Mythen: I am sorry, talking about cyber issues and I have just pulled my plug out of the system.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: General Scheme of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2021)
Johnny Mythen: I thank Mr. O'Driscoll for his contribution and for the work he has done, especially during the recent ransomware effort, which was a horrendous attack on our health system. Does Mr. O'Driscoll believe that his unit is up to speed with its counterparts in Europe? What improvements would Mr. O'Driscoll like to see done now and what improvements are required for the future to combat...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: General Scheme of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2021)
Johnny Mythen: Mr. O'Driscoll mentioned money mules. Does he think there is enough information available to people? Young people often get caught up in this. They see a few quid extra coming in. They do not realise where it is coming from. It is a matter of going down to the bank and putting the money in their account. They do not realise the implications of what they are doing. Is there enough...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: General Scheme of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2021)
Johnny Mythen: As politicians, sometimes we receive the same types of phone calls as the witnesses' organisation because people turn to us when they are in these situations as well. I have experienced it, but I was never trained in this regard, unfortunately. It is a serious situation and I thank the witnesses and their organisation for the work being done. It saves lives every day of the week and it is...
- Select Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 33 - Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (Further Revised) (14 Jul 2021) Johnny Mythen: I thank the Minister and the Minister of State for their presentations. The €50 million in extra supports for live performance announced in budget 2021 came under subhead B6. However, that subhead increased by just €38.2 million in the Revised Estimates for 2020-21. Where was the missing €11.8 million made up? Does this mean cuts of €11.8 million to the budget?...

However, that subhead increased by just €38.2 million in the Revised Estimates for 2020-21. How was the missing €11.8 million made up?
