Select Committee on the Future of Healthcare: General Practice in Disadvantaged Areas (21 Sep 2016)

Hildegarde Naughton: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. The report notes that in 2015 there were 21 GMS vacancies. Do witnesses have the figure for this year? Given that the report highlights that the benefits of the rural practice allowance remuneration wear off after approximately five years, how do they feel a deprivation allowance would best work? How can we best implement it in order that it...

Select Committee on the Future of Healthcare: Relationship between Primary Care and Secondary Care (21 Sep 2016)

Hildegarde Naughton: I thank Deputy Burke for her presentation. I have two questions, one of which is on using the metric of life expectancy. I understand Ireland is ranked 25th in the world with regard to high life expectancy. Japan and Singapore have higher rates of life expectancy, but on the suitability of using that metric when we discuss health inequalities, is it accurate? Is it a useful tool? Also,...

Select Committee on the Future of Healthcare: Inequality in Access to Health Care: Discussion (5 Oct 2016)

Hildegarde Naughton: Yes. I read the Harvard study, which examined race, ethnicity and poverty in terms of having an effect on whether people were well or had ill health. The report also stated that geography was often not taken into account when considering the divides between those who were healthy and those who were not. Has Dr. Burke considered geography in the Irish context?
