Seanad: Oncology Services: Statements. (8 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: Senator McHugh is playing with words.

Seanad: Oncology Services: Statements. (8 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: I wish to share three minutes of my time with my colleague, Senator Kitt.

Seanad: Oncology Services: Statements. (8 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Seán Power, and thank him for coming in to take this matter. It is a bit cheap of the Opposition to play politics with such an emotive issue as cancer.

Seanad: Oncology Services: Statements. (8 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: Whether one lives on this or the other side of the Border, hospitals — this would apply to any hospital — cannot treat patients unless beds are available. Mr. Woodward, MP, is correct in saying "if there is a bed available" because nobody can be treated in the absence of a bed.

Seanad: Oncology Services: Statements. (8 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: The issue of cancer is an emotive one. It is a horrible aggressive illness, one by which all of our lives have been affected. Senator Cummins had a tragedy in his immediate family and I sympathised with him. We have stood here on many occasions and I always felt we were singing from the same hymn sheet. Everybody wants the best for cancer patients in this country and that is what today's...

Seanad: Oncology Services: Statements. (8 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: If Senator McHugh will listen, I will tell him.

Seanad: Oncology Services: Statements. (8 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: I am delighted to report that we had a meeting with the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children, Deputy Harney, only three weeks ago. As a woman living in Sligo, I would hope that by the end of 2006 we will have BreastCheck in Sligo.

Seanad: Oncology Services: Statements. (8 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: It will certainly happen but we will not achieve this by making cheap political jibes.

Seanad: Oncology Services: Statements. (8 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: I certainly believe in the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children, Deputy Harney, and I have no reason not to. She has always delivered for the north west and I have no reason to believe that will change. I am glad BreastCheck will be rolled out in the north west by the end of 2006. Some 96% of women who go for BreastCheck come out clear and never need to be referred. For the 4% who...

Seanad: Oncology Services: Statements. (8 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: Yes. I have already indicated that.

Seanad: Oncology Services: Statements. (8 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: Very well. I will conclude to allow my colleague to speak.

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: Senator Coghlan can give it but he cannot take it.

Seanad: Care of the Elderly: Motion. (14 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: I wish to share my time with Senator Daly. I, too, welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Seán Power, to the House. I am pleased to be able to speak on this motion. Some €150 million was announced in last week's budget by the Minister, Deputy Cowen, to provide care for the elderly. To take up Senator Terry's final comment that people should be allowed die with dignity in a hospital and that...

Seanad: Care of the Elderly: Motion. (14 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: The people to whom I speak talk about the Government's commitment to older people, the wonderful pensions they receive and the great supports they have in their homes. I do not know from where the Senators are pulling the people to whom they have spoken who are complaining. We should not politicise this issue.

Seanad: Care of the Elderly: Motion. (14 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: I sit on the National Economic and Social Forum and I, together with Senator Kate Walsh, am a member of the committee that drafted a report which has gone to Government. I am aware that the €150 million allocated will cover many of the measures we sought in that report. Given that allocation, if this is not a caring Government looking after the elderly in our society, I do not know what is.

Seanad: Care of the Elderly: Motion. (14 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: Senator Browne pulled Senator Minihan up on a comment he made and said that the figures do not amount to €150 million but only to €110 million.

Seanad: Care of the Elderly: Motion. (14 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: Yes, he was right. It is only €110 million in 2006 but in 2007 an extra €40 million will be allocated to be broken down in respect of the areas outlined. Senator Browne called for the appointment of a nursing homes inspector. I am sure an inspector will be appointed in time. The most important point is to announce that €8 million is being spent on the provision of 250 extra beds. A...

Seanad: Order of Business. (15 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: We all read in the newspapers this morning about the unfortunate case of the diagnosis of bowel cancer in a woman, the results of which she was not given until she went for a routine check-up a year later. Yesterday the hospital in question agreed a settlement with her and apologised, saying the error was due to a systems failure. Last week we had a lengthy and good debate on oncology...

Seanad: Order of Business. (15 Dec 2005)

Geraldine Feeney: It is Christmas.
