- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: A Common Vision for Cybersecurity: Discussion (31 May 2023)
Gerard Craughwell: I thank all of the presenters. It really is great to have the entire spectrum of the education and training section before the committee. I will direct specific questions to the witnesses, starting with Professor O'Shea. I have been to MTU, and the committee should visit to see what is going on there. There is great work going on. Professor O'Shea mentioned to me the need for a standard...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: A Common Vision for Cybersecurity: Discussion (31 May 2023)
Gerard Craughwell: I thank all the participants. It has been really engaging. I have two questions, one of which is for Dr. Miller who spoke about what is going on in Northern Ireland. I know there is huge collaboration between him and Professor O'Shea and various other academic institutions in the Republic. With Ireland being an island - North and South, it really does not matter - we either stick together...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: A Common Vision for Cybersecurity: Discussion (31 May 2023)
Gerard Craughwell: I thank Dr. Miller very much. My final question is for anybody who wants to take it . Mr. Larkin mentioned the sum of €1 billion, which is bound to raise eyebrows around here in Leinster House. The State is looking at a surplus of €11 billion this year and €16 billion next year. Mr. Larkin said €1 billion over seven years would be his target. He would want...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: A Common Vision for Cybersecurity: Discussion (31 May 2023)
Gerard Craughwell: I bet the Department of Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform has just switched on all the terminals to look in here right now.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: A Common Vision for Cybersecurity: Discussion (31 May 2023)
Gerard Craughwell: We need to realise that cybercrime is now more lucrative than the drugs industry. It is a cleaner industry for the criminal and the risk of getting caught is probably lower. From that point of view, Mr. Umit Uygur talks about 3% of GDP. In Ireland GDP is a risky figure to be talking about.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: A Common Vision for Cybersecurity: Discussion (31 May 2023)
Gerard Craughwell: Yes, today all the sectors involved in cybersecurity are present and I understand we are verging on the edge of the education committee, but-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: A Common Vision for Cybersecurity: Discussion (31 May 2023)
Gerard Craughwell: -----this is cybersecurity. This is a risk to the State and the people who are here have a unified vision of what the country needs in cybersecurity. The request for €1 billion is a small request at the end of the day, even if it slipped off Mr. Larkin's tongue.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: A Common Vision for Cybersecurity: Discussion (31 May 2023)
Gerard Craughwell: We should go to MTU.
- Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Ms Annita Demetriou, Speaker of the Cypriot House of Representatives (13 Jun 2023)
Gerard Craughwell: I welcome Madam President to our Chamber and I am delighted to see the ambassador here as well. I had lots of things written down that I was going to say but previous speakers have stolen my words so I have to ad libfrom here on. I went to Cyprus in 1972, long before most people in this room were born. I remember fondly swimming in January off the coast of Cyprus. What a wonderful place....

- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Jun 2023)
Gerard Craughwell: What I am about to say will be of great interest to the Acting Leader because of her connection with the Defence Forces. There was a lot of discussion of the independent review group, which, incidentally, concerned a series of allegations. Nothing has been proven as yet and we are waiting for a sworn inquiry into that. However, revelations over the past day or two in The Journalrevealed...
- Seanad: Mother and Baby Institutions Payment Scheme Bill 2022: Report Stage (14 Jun 2023)
Gerard Craughwell: I second Senator Boyhan's amendment. I have known Victor since I came into politics and I have to say that I stand here in awe of the man. The courage he has shown from his first day in the Senate, when he brought this issue to the floor of the Senate on his first day. He has never, ever backed down. He has put his private life on the public stage, and he has been the strongest advocate I...
- Seanad: Gradam an Uachtaráin Bill 2023: Second Stage (14 Jun 2023)
Gerard Craughwell: The Minister of State is welcome to the House. I congratulate her on her appointment as Chief Whip. I am sure it is a difficult job. I am seconding this Bill in loyalty to the late Senator Feargal Quinn. In 2015, when the Minister of State was a Senator, Mr. Quinn laid out its rationale. It was not to see the bourgeoisie of Irish society having more accolades bestowed upon them on top of...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (15 Jun 2023)
Gerard Craughwell: Sometimes in this country bureaucracy goes mad. I am proud – we should all be proud – to have in our Visitors Gallery today, retired Lieutenant Colonel Earnán Naughton, retired Sergeant Major Seamus Gannon, and retired Sergeant Larry Carthy. These three men sent an email to all of us regarding the death of Billy Kedian, who gave his life to save the lives of 14 people in...

- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (20 Jun 2023)
Gerard Craughwell: At weekend, I emailed to every Member of this House a series of photographs of food being served to Ukrainian refugees in hotels. These hotels are being paid substantial sums of money by the State. In addition, the refugees are making a contribution of €70 per adult and €35 per child for food since changes were recently introduced. The photographs that were sent to me are...
